The levels of processing (LOP) account has inspired thousands of studies with verbal material. The few studies investigating levels of processing with nonverbal stimuli used images with nameable objects that, like meaningful words, lend themselves to semantic processing. Thus, nothing is known about the effects of different levels of processing on basic visual perceptual features, such as color. Across four experiments, we tested 187 participants to investigate whether the LOP framework also applies to basic perceptual features in visual associative memory. For Experiments 1 and 2, we developed a paradigm to investigate recognition memory for associations of basic visual features. Participants had to memorize object-color associations (Experiment 1) and fractal-color associations (Experiment 2, to suppress verbalization). In Experiments 3 and 4, we extended our account to cued recall. All experiments revealed reliable LOP effects for basic perceptual features in visual associative memory. Our findings demonstrate that the LOP account is more universal than the current literature suggests.

Purpose: This cross-sectional study explored how the speechreading ability of adults with hearing impairment (HI) in China would affect their perception of the four Mandarin Chinese lexical tones: high (Tone 1), rising (Tone 2), falling-rising (Tone 3), and falling (Tone 4). We predicted that higher speechreading ability would result in better tone performance and that accuracy would vary among individual tones.
Method: A total of 136 young adults with HI (ages 18-25 years) in China participated in the study and completed Chinese speechreading and tone awareness tests.

A smartphone-based non-invasive method was developed for salivary uric acid detection using Gleditsia Sinensis carbon dots (GS-CDs). The GS-CDs synthesized by the one-pot hydrothermal method emitted blue fluorescence at a maximum excitation wavelength of 350 nm and had good fluorescence stability in the presence of different ions, while showing selectivity to uric acid solution. The ability of uric acid (UA) to quench the fluorescent substances present in the GS-CDs, was confirmed through HPLC-FLD and LC-MS, FTIR and XPS.

γ-Glutamylcysteine (γ-EC) can increase intracellular glutathione (GSH) levels, which may prevent and alleviate age-related disorders and chronic diseases caused by oxidative damage. However, the commercial availability of γ-EC remains limited owing to its complex chemical synthesis from glutamate and cysteine. In this study, we have developed the method of the effective conversion of GSH to γ-EC to achieve the optimal reaction conditions for repeated batch production and potential application in industrial γ-EC production using the phytochelatin synthase-like enzyme NsPCS.
