Published: June 2015

The synthesis of novel PEG-based hydrogel via chemoselective potassium acyl trifluoroborate (KAT) and -carbamoyl hydroxylamines amide ligation is reported. The gelation kinetics, determined by dynamic rheometry, is pH dependent and allows fine-tuning of the gelation time. For a 4 wt % PEG hydrogel, at low acidic pHs (3 to 6) gelation proceeds rapidly within few minutes, comparable or existing the faster known gelation times. At neutral and physiological pHs (7 and 7.4) the reaction is slower, forming a hydrogel in ca. 80 min. The gels are suitable for the encapsulation of bovine chondrocytes with the high viability (96% after 2 days), demonstrating the biocompatibility of the KAT ligation for the first time.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and their biocompatible conjugates find wide use as transducers in (bio)sensors and as Nano-pharmaceutics. The study of the interaction between AuNPs and proteins in representative application media helps to better understand their intrinsic behaviors. A multi-environment, multi-parameter screening strategy is proposed based on asymmetric flow field flow fractionation (AF4)-multidetector.

Department of Polymer and Biomaterials Science, Faculty of Chemical Technology and Engineering, West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Szczecin, Poland.

Fabricating complex hierarchical structures mimicking natural vessels and arteries is pivotal for addressing problems of cardiovascular diseases. Various fabrication strategies have been explored to achieve this goal, each contributing unique advantages and challenges to the development of functional vascular grafts. In this study, a three-layered tubular structure resembling vascular grafts was fabricated using biocompatible and biodegradable copolymers of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) using advanced manufacturing techniques.

December 2024

Institute of Translational Medicine, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, 210096, China.

Colored contact lenses have gained popularity among young individuals owing to their ability to alter the appearance of the wearer's eyes. However, conventional lenses containing chemical dyes are susceptible to detachment of the pigment layer, which can lead to corneal damage. In this research, a novel cellulose-based structural color contact lens (SCCL) is presented that enhances aesthetic appeal via a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) layer.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a group of polymers with a variety of monomers, which are extracted from microorganisms and plants. Due to its good biocompatibility, biodegradability, tunable mechanical property and piezoelectricity, PHAs have been widely used in biomedical fields, such as bone, cartilage, nerve, vascular and skin tissue engineering. This review focuses on the in vivo synthesis, metabolism and biological functions of PHA, and the applications of PHAs in the field of tissue engineering and commercial were also summarized and discussed.
