Epicardial Adipose Tissue from Computed Tomography: a Missing Link in Premature Coronary Artery Disease?

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Imaging

January 2025

Sorbonne Université, unité d'imagerie cardiovasculaire et thoracique, Hôpital La Pitié Salpêtrière (AP-HP), Laboratoire d'Imagerie Biomédicale, INSERM, CNRS, Institute of Cardiometabolism and Nutrition, ACTION Group, Paris, France.

Purpose: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) could contribute to the specific atherosclerosis profile observed in premature coronary artery disease (pCAD) characterized by accelerated plaque burden (calcified and non-calcified), high risk plaque features (HRP) and ischemic recurrence. Our aims were to describe EAT volume and density in pCAD compared to asymptomatic individuals matched on CV risk factors and to study their relationship with coronary plaque severity extension and vulnerability.

Materials And Methods: 208 patients who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) were analyzed.

Sepsis is a major cause of mortality worldwide. Early identification and treatment are critical to improve survival. Band count has been used as part of SIRS criteria for the early identification of potentially septic patients.

Background and Hypothesis Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients are at increased risk for recurrence compared to other subtypes of breast cancer. Previous evidence showed that adiposity may contribute to worsened cancer control. Current measures of obesity, such as body-mass index (BMI), are poor surrogates of adiposity, while visceral-to-subcutaneous adiposity ratio (VSR), which can be measured from routine computed tomography (CT) imaging, is a direct adiposity measure.

Introduction: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder of glucose homeostasis that is a significant risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, as well as mood disorders, which often precede neurodegenerative conditions. We examined the medial habenulainterpeduncular nucleus (MHb-IPN), as this circuit plays crucial roles in mood regulation, has been linked to the development of diabetes after smoking, and is rich in cholinergic neurons, which are affected in other brain areas in Alzheimer's disease.

Methods: This study aimed to investigate the impact of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycemia, a type 1 diabetes model, on mitochondrial and lipid homeostasis in 4% paraformaldehyde-fixed sections from the MHb and IPN of C57BL/6 J male mice, using a recently developed automated pipeline for mitochondrial analysis in confocal images.

Background: Perivascular Spaces (PVS) are a marker of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) that are visible on brain imaging. Larger PVS has been associated with poor quality of life and cognitive impairment post-stroke. However, the association between PVS and post-stroke sensorimotor outcomes has not been investigated.
