Objective: To evaluate the malaria diagnostic capability in Shanghai Municipal Malaria Diagnostic Reference Laboratory from 2017 to 2022 and to analyze factors affecting the diagnosis results, so as to provide the scientific evidence for increasing the laboratory malaria diagnostic capability during the post-elimination stage.

Methods: -negative blood smears were randomly sampled using a proportional sampling method each quarter during the period from 2017 to 2022 and scored by Shanghai Municipal Malaria Diagnostic Reference Laboratory. Malaria cases' blood samples from district centers for disease control and prevention in Shanghai Municipality were re-reviewed using microscopy and multiplex PCR assay to evaluate the capability of malaria diagnosis.

Insights Into Cataract Surgery Outcomes In Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Real-World Perspectives Across Severity Grades.

Ophthalmol Retina

November 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Charité University Medicine Berlin, corporate member of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität Berlin, and Berlin Institute of Health; Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), Berlin, Germany. Electronic address:

Purpose: Cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) share age as a main risk factor and thus have a high coincidence. Both conditions substantially reduce visual acuity. This study aimed to assess the impact of cataract surgery on visual acuity, retinal morphology, and vascular-endothelial-growth-factor (VEGF) inhibitor therapy in patients with AMD.

Article Synopsis
  • An organ-specific PET scanner can achieve similar sensitivity and higher spatial resolution than whole-body PET scanners by using fewer detectors, which helps to lower costs and improve image clarity.
  • The development focuses on creating high-resolution depth encoding PET detectors with better timing and fewer signal processing channels, allowing for affordable scanners tailored for specific organs.
  • The study employs a combination of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays and lutetium yttrium orthosilicate (LYSO) arrays to optimize crystal identification, measure interaction depth, and enhance coincidence timing resolutions for improved imaging accuracy.

Ultrasonography can be more informative than computed tomography for diagnosing radial head fractures: An illustrative case series.

Ultraschall Med

December 2024

Research Department, Basel Academy for Quality and Research in Medicine, Basel, Switzerland.

Ultrasonography is increasingly being discussed as an alternative to X-rays in emergency department settings. Systematic comparisons of the 2 modalities are often based on the use of computed tomography as a reference. When diagnosing patients with elbow trauma, the physicians at our emergency department experienced that ultrasonography can be more informative than cone beam computed tomography for identifying radial head fractures.
