Background: An optimal core needle biopsy (CNB) is expected to balance between tissue diagnosis, the accuracy of negative sampling, and concordance with reports from resected specimens to select the appropriate treatment. Though various techniques for CNBs are available, no guidelines exist for processing CNB, with practices varying from lab to lab for transport and processing. This prospective study aims to design a cost-effective, user-friendly pre-embedding method for CNBs to yield intact cores.
Objective: To compare the outcomes of CNBs by a conventional method with those processed by the modified pre-embedded processing protocol over 2 years.
Material And Methods: Presurgical CNBs from SOL in various organs were subjected to the conventional free-floating method in formalin (control) for histopathology diagnosis. CNBs from the corresponding, freshly resected SOLs (test) were taken, inked with coloring inks if multiple, placed between two 2 × 2 cm polyurethane foam meshes fitted inside cassettes, fixed in formalin, and transported to the laboratory. The two CNB groups were coded and scored independently for intactness, tissue processing, ease of embedding, and ease of cutting sections. Data obtained were statistically analyzed.
Results: Test CNB cores were better processed, intact, linear, and aligned, compared to control CNBs. With four CNBs in one block, the number of blocks and sections were cut-down by one-fourth.
Conclusion: CNBs processed using polyurethane foam and coloring inks were superior and economical against conventional free-floating CNBs. This technique can be practiced by surgeons at the bedside.

Post rotavirus vaccine introduction in Mozambique (September 2015), we documented a decline in rotavirus-associated diarrhoea and genotypes changes in our diarrhoeal surveillance spanning 2008-2021. This study aimed to perform whole-genome sequencing of rotavirus strains from 2009 to 2012 (pre-vaccine) and 2017-2018 (post-vaccine). Rotavirus strains previously detected by conventional PCR as G2P[4], G2P[6], G3P[4], G8P[4], G8P[6], and G9P[6] from children with moderate-to-severe and less-severe diarrhoea and without diarrhoea (healthy community controls) were sequenced using Illumina MiSeq platform and analysed using bioinformatics tools.

Introduction: Malaria molecular surveillance has the potential to generate information on biological threats that compromise the effectiveness of antimalarial interventions. This study aims to streamline surveillance activities to inform the new strategic plan of the Mozambican National Malaria Control Programme (2023-2030) for malaria control and elimination.
Methods And Analyses: This prospective genomic surveillance study aims to generate genetic data to monitor diagnostic failures due to deletions and molecular markers of antimalarial drug resistance, to characterise transmission sources and to inform the implementation of new antimalarial approaches to be introduced in Mozambique (chemoprevention and child malaria vaccination).

Purpose: To propose a simplified histological classification for core-needle biopsy (CNB) of thyroid nodules with four diagnostic categories (DC) and provide the risk of malignancy (ROM) and the expected incidence for each DC. There is no uniform scheme for categorizing CNB specimens, except for a Korean diagnostic classification similar to the Bethesda system for FNAC.
Methods: Data from a single institution using CNB as a routine diagnostic tool for thyroid nodules.

Background: Alterations in haematological, biochemical parameters and cytokine levels, were reported in patients with COVID-19, however, there is an underrepresentation of the African population, which could provide evidence for understanding SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis and useful tools for clinical management of cases. In this study, we aimed to determine the haematological, biochemical and cytokine profile in Mozambican individuals with SARS-CoV-2.
Methods: A cohort of 85 Mozambican individuals with RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 results, was stratified into negative, asymptomatic, mild, moderate, and severe categories.
