Hypothesis: Novel photoresponsive hybrid surfactants, in which a combination of perfluoroalkyl and alkyl chains and cationic head groups are connected via azobenzene moieties, are excellent candidates for assembling low-molecular-weight organogels (LMOGs) with reversibly switchable viscoelasticities triggered by external stimuli.

Experiments: The structure-composition-property relationships of gels assembled with the hybrid surfactants were investigated by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy, SEM, XRD, and rheology.

Findings: Hybrid surfactants containing perfluorohexyl chains with more than six carbons gelled in a variety of organic solvents at concentrations of less than a few percent. In particular, compositions with the perfluorooctyl and somewhat shorter hydrocarbon chains (C1-C4) gelled in both organic solvents and water. The gellable solvent species can be well grouped according to their solubility parameters, suggesting that gelation properties can be predicted from the chemical structure of the surfactant. Mechanical and structural investigations revealed that gel viscoelasticity can be reversibly altered by applying photo, shear, and heat stimuli, which is achieved through the formation and deformation of lamella-like molecular aggregates. The multi-responsive gelation and facile molecular design of the present hybrid surfactants will expand the fields in which fluorinated LMOGs can be applied.

Carbon fibre reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) implants have gained interest because of reported biomechanical advantages and radio-lucent properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of CFR-PEEK nails in patients with metastatic bone disease (MBD). We performed a retrospective cohort study evaluating patients with MBD undergoing intramedullary (IM) nailing for prophylaxis or fixation of pathological fractures using CFR- PEEK or titanium implants.

Efficient Orange Light-Emitting Diodes from Nontoxic Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Copper Halides Enabled by Nonionic Surfactant Chemisorption.

Nano Lett

Ternary copper halides with an eco-friendly property have emerged as attractive candidates to replace toxic lead-containing perovskites for light-emitting diodes (LEDs), yet achieving long-wavelength electroluminescence remains unexplored. Herein, we report the first realization of orange-emitting LEDs (595 nm) based on nontoxic organic-inorganic PEACuI (PEA = β-phenylethylamine) films enabled by a nonionic surfactant poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) (APPG) chemisorption. Experimental and theoretical analyses rationalize that the APPG additive has strong chemisorption with the Cu-I framework within the grain boundaries of PEACuI films, which not only improves the film's morphology but also passivates the iodine vacancy defects.

Lipid core-chitosan shell hybrid nanoparticles for enhanced oral bioavailability of sorafenib.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

College of Pharmacy, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, Hanyang University ERICA, Ansan 15588, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Limited aqueous solubility is a major hurdle resulting in poor and variable oral bioavailability, high doses, side effects, and the suboptimal therapeutic efficacy of sorafenib (SRF). In this study, we developed SRF-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SRF-SLNs) and lipid core-chitosan shell hybrid nanoparticles (CS-SRF-SLNs) to improve the oral absorption of SRF. SRF-SLNs were prepared using a stearyl alcohol core stabilized with a surfactant mixture, followed by surface decoration with chitosan to form CS-SRF-SLNs.

We report an experimental study on how topological defects induced by cylindrical air inclusions in the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal RM734 are influenced by ionic doping, including an ionic surfactant and ionic polymer. Our results show that subtle differences in molecular structure can lead to distinct surface alignments and topological defects. The ionic surfactant induces a planar alignment, with two -1/2 line defects adhering to the cylindrical bubble surface.

Gold Nanorods Decorated by Conjugated Microporous Polymers for Infrared Responsive Cytostatic Drug Delivery.

Langmuir

January 2025

Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V., Hohe Straße 6, 01069 Dresden, Germany.

Near-infrared (NIR) controlled drug delivery systems have drawn a lot of attention throughout the past few decades due to the deep penetration depth and comparatively minor side effects of the stimulus. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach for gastric cancer treatment by combining photothermal infrared-sensitive gold nanorods (AuNRs) with a conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) to create a drug delivery system tailored for transporting the cytostatic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). CMPs are fully conjugated networks with high internal surface areas that can be precisely tailored to the adsorption and transport of active compounds through the right choice of chemical functionalities.
