Article Abstract

The synthesis of methoxysilyl-substituted siloxanes with a double-four-ring (D4R) framework [Si8O12][OSiR(OMe)2]8 (R = OMe or vinyl) via the dealcoholative coupling between silanol [Si8O12][OH]8 and alkoxysilane was accomplished and achieved a halogen-free synthetic process. The solid-state structure of [Si8O12][OSi(OMe)3]8 was determined via a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Conjugated polymer donors have always been one of the important components of organic solar cells (OSCs), particularly those featuring simple synthetic routes, proper energy levels, and appropriate aggregation behavior. In this work, we employed a nonfused electron-deficient building block, dicyanobithiophene (2CT), for constructing high-performance donors. Combining this with side-chain engineering, two novel halogen-free polymer donors, PB2CT-BO and PB2CT-HD, were reported.

Article Synopsis
  • Derivatization is important for enhancing the properties of organic materials, but it often requires multiple syntheses of similar intermediates, making the process tedious and time-consuming.
  • This study focuses on thienobenzobisthiazole (TBTz) as a key component in donor polymers for organic photovoltaics, showcasing an efficient late-stage functionalization method that allows for easy synthesis of various derivatives from a single intermediate.
  • The new ester-functionalized TBTz polymer achieves low voltage loss and high charge generation efficiency, suggesting a promising pathway for creating high-performance, halogen-free polymers in organic solar cells.

Recognition of the intermediacy and regulation of reactivity patterns of radical intermediates in radical chemistry have profound impacts on harnessing and developing the full potential of open-shell species in synthetic settings. In this work, the possibility of formation of O/N-X intermediates from Brønsted base covalently tethered carbonyl hypohalites (BCTCs) for the generation of heteroatom-centered radicals has certainly been excluded by NMR experiments and density functional theory calculations. Instead, the spectroscopic analyses reveal that the BCTCs serve as precursors of tether-tunable distonic radical anions (TDRAs) which have been unequivocally substantiated to be involved in the direct cleavage of O/N-H bonds to generate the corresponding heteroatom-centered radicals.

Ordered mesoporous silica is widely used in catalysis, adsorption, and biomedicine, among which SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous-15) is one of the most widely studied. However, the synthesis of SBA-15 often requires strong acid (hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid), which will not only corrode industrial equipment but also pollute the environment with the wastewater containing strong acid and halogen (sulfur). Here, we demonstrate a green synthetic strategy for SBA-15 under weakly acidic conditions through an anionic assembly route.

AgCl nanomaterials recently attracted scientific interest as useful structural building blocks for producing metallic nanomaterials owing to their facile synthesis, controllable morphology, and ease of removal under ambient conditions. However, their complex chemical reactivity has primarily been studied in association with water solubility or reducibility. This study investigates the pivotal role of precursor ligands in the photochemical synthesis of metallic cubic mesh nanostructures on the AgCl templates.
