Bitcoin is designed as a peer-to-peer cash system. To work as a currency, it must be stable or be backed by a government. In this paper, we show that the volatility of Bitcoin prices is extreme and almost 10 times higher than the volatility of major exchange rates (US dollar against the euro and the yen). The excess volatility even adversely affects its potential role in portfolios. Our analysis implies that Bitcoin cannot function as a medium of exchange and has only limited use as a risk-diversifier. In contrast, we use the deflationary design of Bitcoin as a theoretical basis and demonstrate that Bitcoin displays store of value characteristics over long horizons.

This paper examines gold and cryptocurrencies' hedge and safe-haven capabilities against various downturns, including the COVID-19 pandemic and Geopolitical Risks (GPR), across different market conditions. The study covers a sample period from 2013 to 2021 at a daily frequency, employing the GARCH model and quantile regression with binary variables. The empirical results indicate that neither gold nor cryptocurrencies can act as strong hedges against infectious disease pandemics.

This research delves into the obstacles and difficulties associated with predicting cryptocurrency movements in the volatile global financial market. This study develops and evaluates an advanced Deep Learning-Enhanced Temporal Fusion Transformer (ADE-TFT) model to estimate Bitcoin values more accurately. This research employs cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to comprehensively examine various aspects of cryptocurrency forecasting, including geopolitical implications, market sentiment analysis, and pattern detection in transactional datasets.

Using the wavelet multiscale coherence technique, the paper examines the interdependences between global market assets, sovereign credit default swap (CDS) and yield-to-maturity on bond spread for African economies from January 2019 to March 2023. The empirical results primarily reveal a high level of coherence between global market assets and Africa's sovereign CDS and yield-to-maturity, although varying across countries and time-frequency domain. Notably, the high degree of coherence and the positive co-movement between sovereign CDS and global market assets are more concentrated at the medium and upper frequency bands.

Predicting Bitcoin prices is crucial because they reflect trends in the overall cryptocurrency market. Owing to the market's short history and high price volatility, previous research has focused on the factors influencing Bitcoin price fluctuations. Although previous studies used sentiment analysis or diversified input features, this study's novelty lies in its utilization of data classified into more than five major categories.

This paper analyses the transition of Ethereum (ETH) from the energy-intensive Proof-of-Work (PoW) to the less energy-intensive Proof-of-Stake (PoS). We analyze returns, volatility, return correlations and volume of ETH, ETC and Bitcoin for all events in the lead-up to the actual change from PoW to PoS also labelled "the merge." The analysis suggests that some investors value the less energy-intensive mining mechanism and invest in ETH.
