Stability and Rheological Properties of the Novel Silica-Based Organogel-A Drug Carrier with High Solubilization Potential.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, Adam Mickiewicz University, Uniwersytetu Poznańskiego 8, 61-614 Poznań, Poland.

Dissolution of a poorly soluble active pharmacological substance in a drug carrier usually requires advanced techniques and production equipment. The use of novel carriers such as microemulsions, vesicles, or nanocarriers might entail various limitations concerning production cost, formulation stability, or active substance capacity. In this paper, we present a novel fumed silica-based organogel as a low-cost, simple preparation drug or cosmetic carrier with interesting rheological properties and high solubilization capacity.

Effects of the Interactions Between Food Additive Titanium Dioxide and Matrices on Genotoxicity.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Department of Food Science & Technology, Seoul Women's University, Seoul 01797, Republic of Korea.

Titanium dioxide (TiO), a white color food additive, is widely used in bakery products, candies, chewing gums, soups, and creamers. Concerns about its potential genotoxicity have recently emerged, particularly following the European Union's ban on its usage as a food additive due to its genotoxicity potential. Conflicting in vitro and in vivo results regarding its genotoxicity highlight the need for further in-depth investigation.

Congenital syphilis remains a significant global health concern, with severe morbidity and mortality if undiagnosed and untreated. Although many infants appear asymptomatic at birth, subtle clinical signs-including bullous lesions (congenital bullous syphilis, also known as pemphigus syphiliticus)-may facilitate early detection. Recognizing this rare manifestation is crucial for timely intervention, reducing serious outcomes.

: Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) have significantly advanced the treatment of various dermatological conditions by modulating the JAK-STAT signalling pathway. While these inhibitors have proven effective, they also pose challenges due to associated increase in serum lipid levels and relative potential cardiovascular risks. This perspective work aims to discuss the implications of these lipid alterations proposing management strategies for patients with dermatological disorders under JAKi treatments.

The toxicokinetics of nitrosamines remain a mystery to this day, though it appears that the role of nitrosamines in potentiating the generation of mutations required for the onset of skin cancer continues to be a significant concern. Nitrosamines are mutagens, genotoxic substances, and mediators of phototoxicity/carcinogenicity, whose long-term daily usage, in the context of polypharmacy, can result in the parallel appearance of heterogeneous forms of skin cancer: keratinocytic and melanocytic. But a number of clinical observations suggest that it is the nitrosamines that potentiate the multiple occurrences of skin cancer over the years, or recurrences of skin cancer localized in areas exposed to solar radiation.
