Introduction: Accurate doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of the key practices of infection control because of increased risk of infection transmission caused by medical garments or environmental contamination.

Objectives: The study aimed to develop a reality-based education program and identify its effects on nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and contamination after PPE doffing.

Methods: Randomized control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 56 nurses were randomly assigned to experimental ( = 28) and control ( = 28) groups. The experimental group underwent a new reality-based education program to improve PPE use. Subsequently, participants were assessed on knowledge of and attitude toward PPE use, as well as number and area of contaminated sites after removing PPE and mask fitting test.

Results: There were no significant differences in knowledge and attitude to PPE use. The experimental group had significantly fewer contaminated sites than the control group (42 vs. 89), and a significantly lower mean contaminated site area (16.63 ± 24.27 vs. 95.41 ± 117.51 cm). The tuberculosis mask fitting test success rates were 68% and 50% in the experimental and control groups, respectively, but the difference was not significant.

Conclusion: The reality-based education on use of PPE helps to reduce contamination and improve performance related to the use of PPE for infection control.

A novel augmented reality-based simulator for enhancing orthopedic surgical training.

Comput Biol Med

December 2024

Research in Orthopedic Computer Science, Balgrist University Hospital, University of Zurich, Lengghalde 5, Zurich, 8008, Switzerland.

Background: Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is a well-established and common orthopedic surgery. Due to the complexity involved in THA, orthopedic surgeons require rigorous training. However, the current gold standard, the tutor-guided and -evaluated apprenticeship model is time-consuming, costly, and poses risks to patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Cognitive restructuring (CR) is a psychological technique for treating depression but is often hard to access, leading researchers to explore a VR-based self-guided training on identifying negative automatic thoughts (NAT).
  • The study involved 20 participants using the VR-STINAT program, which included training modules and post-training homework, measuring effectiveness through assessments and participant feedback.
  • Results showed that the VR-STINAT was well-received with an average satisfaction rating of 80.68%, high accuracy in identifying NAT, and minimal side effects for most participants, but also illuminated challenges and areas for improvement.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional evaluations of dental students' fixed prosthodontic skills are often time-consuming and subjective, prompting the development of a new 3D auto-evaluation tool utilizing augmented reality (3DAR) to improve the efficiency and reliability of these assessments.
  • The study involved 50 dental students who prepared tooth models, which were then scanned and evaluated using the 3DAR algorithm, resulting in strong reliability scores compared to a traditional manual scoring method, while also saving significant time during evaluations.
  • The results indicated that the 3DAR method not only provided highly reliable assessments but also drastically reduced evaluation time and received positive feedback from users, highlighting its potential to enhance dental education.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer patients face serious challenges such as pain, anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life, making effective coping strategies essential.* -
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) interventions in alleviating these symptoms, finding that gaming and video content particularly helped reduce pain and anxiety.* -
  • Short-term VR interventions (lasting 6 weeks or less) were especially beneficial, indicating that specific content and duration matter for improving cancer patients' overall experience during treatment.*

Introduction: People with type 2 diabetes can experience diabetes distress which can negatively affect health outcomes. Non-pharmacological interventions such as mindfulness can help address diabetes distress. However, face-to-face programmes can be constrained by cost, poor accessibility and lack of availability.
