An Illustrative Review of Common Modern Craniotomies.

Craniotomy, or a surgical opening into the skull, has been observed as early as Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. Early craniotomies carried great morbidity and mortality and standardized during the 20 century, improving surgical outcomes. The simultaneous evolution of medical imaging and stereotactic navigation systems has allowed imaging to correlate findings with surgical approaches, further optimizing patient safety. We review the history of craniotomy and provide an imaging review of the most common craniotomy approaches.

However, the observed differences in alignment favoring kinematic alignment may not improve outcomes (performance or durability) in ways that patients can perceive, and likewise, statistical differences in outcome scores sometimes observed in clinical trials may be too small for patients to notice.

Diagnosing cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is challenging because of its phenotypic heterogeneity, multiorgan involvement requiring interaction among experts in different specialties and subspecialties, lack of a single noninvasive diagnostic tool, and still limited awareness in the medical community. Missing or delaying the diagnosis of CA may profoundly impact on patients' outcomes, as potentially life-saving treatments may be omitted or delayed. The suspicion of CA should arise when "red flags" for this condition are present, together with increased left ventricular wall thickness.
