Aims: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the taste perception in patients with upper complete dentures.
Methods And Results: One hundred seventy male and female patients (45-83 years old) upper denture wearers were evaluated for their gustatory function by the paper strips technique in relation to the four basic tastes. The taste test was performed with and without the presence of the denture on the palate. Through Shapiro-Wilk and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, the results were analyzed by their normal distribution. The t-test for paired samples was used to evaluate if there was a statistical difference on the taste perception and itself revealed that there is a significant difference (p < 0.01) when the taste perception was analyzed for the absence and presence of the prosthesis (alone and compared) (p < 0.01). The results revealed that patients with dentures had great difficulty to recognize the bitter taste, followed by the salty, sweet, and sour.
Conclusion: The presence of the denture was able to modify the perception of taste when compared to its absence, especially for the bitter taste.

d-Tagatose, a rare sugar endowed with a low-calorie property, superior taste quality, and probiotic functionality, has garnered significant research attention. However, the prevailing biological production methods relying on β-galactosidase and l-arabinose isomerase face challenges including high cost and suboptimal conversion efficiency. Consequently, it is of great research significance to find efficient alternative routes for d-tagatose synthesis.

In this study, we analyzed the potential associations of selected laboratory and anamnestic parameters, as well as 12 genetic polymorphisms (SNPs), with clinical COVID-19 occurrence and severity in 869 hospitalized patients. The SNPs analyzed by qPCR were selected based on population-wide genetic (GWAS) data previously indicating association with the severity of COVID-19, and additional SNPs that have been shown to be important in cellular processes were also examined. We confirmed the associations of COVID-19 with pre-existing diabetes and found an unexpected association between less severe disease and the loss of smell and taste.

Background: Although frontotemporal dementia (FTD) with right anterior temporal lobe (RATL) predominance has been recognized as a separate FTD subtype, a uniform description of the syndrome is still missing. This multicenter study, led by an international working group (IWG), aims to establish a cohesive clinical phenotype and lay the groundwork for consensus on terminology and diagnostic standards.
Method: Retrospective clinical data were systematically collected across 18 dementia centers.

Background: Smell dysfunction has been one of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) symptoms. Identification of those with these symptoms are important as olfactory impairment in general has been studied to have increased mortality, poor quality of life, increased incidence of depression and risk for dementia. Smell dysfunction related to Covid-19 in older adults and its impact is lesser studied.
