In this work, spectroscopic properties of europium and erbium ions in heavy metal oxide glasses have been studied. The phonon energy of the glass host was determined based on Eu excitation spectra measurements. Near-IR emission spectra at 1550 nm related to I → I transition of erbium in heavy metal glasses were examined with special regards to luminescence bandwidth and measured lifetime. In particular, correlation between phonon energy and the measured lifetime I (Er) was proposed. The luminescence lifetime for the I upper laser state of erbium decreases with increasing phonon energy in glass matrices. Completely different results were obtained glass samples with europium ions, where the D lifetime increases with increasing phonon energy. Our investigations suggest that the values of measured D lifetime equal to radiative lifetimes for all heavy metal oxide glasses.

Cadmium is a heavy metal contaminant known to cause various health issues. However, limited research exists on the serum metabolomic effects of cadmium exposure in children. In this study, we recruited 42 children to analyze their serum metabolomic profiles, along with measuring urinary cadmium and creatinine concentrations, to evaluate the impact of environmental cadmium exposure on serum metabolism.

The effect of open-pit bauxite mining on beach sediment contamination in the urban coastal environment of Kuantan City, Malaysia, was investigated. The contents of 11 heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Al, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, As, Ni, Cr, and Ag) in 30 samples from Kuantan beach sediment zones (supratidal, intertidal, and subtidal) were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry followed by contamination indexes, Pearson's correlation analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA). The results indicated that Cd, As, Ni, and Ag values in beach sediment zones were significantly higher compared to background values.

A cationic N-heterocyclic phosphenium (NHP) iron tetracarbonyl complex was synthesised from the free cation and its behaviour towards various anionic reactants studied. Reactions with fluoride, chloride, and hydride sources proceeded under attachment of the anion at phosphorus to yield Fe(CO)-complexes of neutral diazaphospholenes, while bromide and iodide reacted under addition of the anion at the metal and decarbonylation to yield NHP iron halides. Reactions with amides and organometallics were unselective.

Semiconductor-metal hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs) are promising materials for photocatalytic applications, such as water splitting for green hydrogen generation. While most studies have focused on Cd containing HNPs, the realization of actual applications will require environmentally compatible systems. Using heavy-metal free ZnSe-Au HNPs as a model, we investigate the dependence of their functionality and efficiency on the cocatalyst metal domain characteristics ranging from the single-atom catalyst (SAC) regime to metal-tipped systems.
