The fifth biennial ORS PSRS International Spine Research Symposium took place from November 3 to 7, 2019, at Skytop Lodge in northeastern Pennsylvania. Organized jointly by the Orthopaedic Research Society and the Philadelphia Spine Research Society, the symposium attracted more than 180 participants from 10 different countries to share the latest advances in basic and preclinical spine research. Following the symposium, participants were invited to submit full-length manuscripts to this special issue of JOR Spine.

Background: Palliative spine radiation therapy is prone to treatment at the wrong anatomic level. We developed a fully automated deep learning-based spine-targeting quality assurance system (DL-SpiQA) for detecting treatment at the wrong anatomic level. DL-SpiQA was evaluated based on retrospective testing of spine radiation therapy treatments and prospective clinical deployment.

Without careful dissection of the ways in which biases can be encoded into artificial intelligence (AI) health technologies, there is a risk of perpetuating existing health inequalities at scale. One major source of bias is the data that underpins such technologies. The STANDING Together recommendations aim to encourage transparency regarding limitations of health datasets and proactive evaluation of their effect across population groups.

Purpose: Despite the introduction of "standardized counting" methods, errors in counting spinal levels and subsequent wrong-level surgery (WLS) remain critically important patient safety concerns. Previous work by our group has documented inconsistency in the identification of T12 despite the use of these systems including the Spinal Deformity Study Group (SDSG) conventions. To assist with consistent and repeatable identification of proposed preoperative surgical levels, the current study investigates a new strategy: utilization of a "landmark vertebra".
