Cinnamic acid lowers blood pressure and reverses vascular endothelial dysfunction in rats.

J Food Drug Anal

December 2024

Cardiovascular Research Group, Department of Pharmacy, COMSATS University Islamabad, Abbottabad Campus, University Road, Abbottabad-22060, KP, Pakistan.

Cinnamic acid (CA) possesses important cardiovascular effects such as cardioprotective, antiatherogenic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant, which predicts its potential role in the treatment of hypertension. The study was executed to investigate the antihypertensive potential of CA in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats followed by evaluation in diverse vascular preparations. Invasive blood pressure monitoring technique was used in normotensive and hypertensive rats, under anesthesia.

Entropy generation and water conservation in the mammalian nephron.

J Comp Physiol B

January 2025

Departamento de Fisiologia, Instituto de Biociências da Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

During the transition from fresh waters to terrestrial habitats, significant adaptive changes occurred in kidney function of vertebrates to cope with varying osmotic challenges. We investigated the mechanisms driving water conservation in the mammalian nephron, focusing on the relative contributions of active ion transport and Starling forces. We constructed a thermodynamic model to estimate the entropy generation associated with different processes within the nephron, and analyzed their relative importance in urine formation.

Cell Culture Development, Biogen, 5000 Davis Drive, Research Triangle Park, NC, 27709, USA.

Membrane fouling is a common and complex challenge with cell culture perfusion process in biopharmaceutical manufacturing that can have detrimental effects on the process performance. In this study, we evaluated a method to calculate the hollow fiber membrane resistance at different time points for water and supernatant. In addition, the number of subvisible particles of < 200 nm.

Background: Cerebral microvascular dysfunction and nitro-oxidative stress are present in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may contribute to disease progression and severity. A pro-nitro-oxidative environment can lead to post-translational modifications of ion channels central to microvascular regulation in the brain, including the large conductance Ca-activated K channels (BK). Nitro-oxidative modulation of BK can resulting in decreased activity and vascular hyper-contractility, thus compromising neurovascular regulation.

Background: The defining characteristic of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a reversible, predominantly vasogenic edema of the white matter, particularly affecting the parenchyma supplied by the posterior circulation. PRES is most commonly associated with hypertension. We present a case series of seven normotensive patients diagnosed with cancer who had posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome.
