Objectives: The antioxidant properties of some 2-(2-phenyl)-1-benzo(d)imidazol-1-yl)-N'-(arylmethylene) acetohydrazide derivatives (1-12) were investigated in this study.

Materials And Methods: The antioxidant activity of compounds 1-12 was explored by determination of rat liver microsomal nicotinamideadenine dinucleotide phosphate dependent inhibition on lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels and microsomal ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity.

Results: All synthesised compounds had LPO inhibitory activity (15-57%) except compound 6, which contains a thiophene ring. Almost all the compounds displayed slightly inhibitory activity (2-20%) on EROD.

Conclusion: The most active compound, 3 bearing a p-bromophenyl substituent at the second position of the benzimidazole ring, caused 57% inhibition of LPO level, while butylated hydroxytoluene showed 65% inhibition. None of the synthesised compounds had a marked inhibitory effect on EROD activity.

High altitude characterized by the low partial pressure of the oxygen is a life-threatening condition that contributes to the development of acute pulmonary edema and hypoxic lung injury. In this study, we aimed to investigate the contribution of some inflammatory and oxidative stress markers along with antioxidant system enzymes in the pathogenesis of HAPE (high-altitude pulmonary edema) formation. We incorporated the study on 42 male rats to unravel the role of mast cells (MCs) and TNF-α in the lung after the effect of acute hypobaric hypoxia.

In the present study, 5-Hydroxy-2-(Oleoyloxymethyl) -4H-pyran-4-one (KMO 3), and their chelated with Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions were synthesized to explore their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase and cytotoxicity. To this end, the structures of the obtained compounds were confirmed by ATR/FT-IR, 13C and 1H-NMR, and UV-vis techniques. The results show that chelating fatty ester presents the bands at 1567m, 1511w cm-1 attributed to the coordinated carbonyl (Cu(II)←[O=C]2), and the bands at 1540m, 1519m cm-1 which were attributed to the coordinated carbonyl (Fe(III)←[O=C]3).

Antiproliferative effect of hydroalcoholic brown propolis extract on tumor and non-tumor cells.

Studies show that propolis has antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, and immunomodulatory properties, and may protect against diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. We aimed to extract compounds of brown propolis with hydroalcoholic solvents and evaluate their cytotoxic activity on tumor and non-tumor cells by MTT test. We tested the solute:solvent ratio (ethanol:water) and extraction time in a Shaker incubator (710 rpm) before conducting a central composite rotational design (CCRD) to optimize time and solvent mixture.

Programa de Pós-graduação em Medicina Veterinária, Laboratório de Doenças Parasitárias, Departamento de Medicina Veterinária Preventiva, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria - UFSM, Santa Maria, RS, Brasil.

This study evaluated dynamics of antibodies in dogs treated for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Twenty-one dogs naturally infected by Leishmania spp. were grouped based on the treatment protocol: G1 (n=4) received allopurinol; G2 (n=10) allopurinol with miltefosine; and G3 (n=7) allopurinol, miltefosine and Leish-Tec® vaccine.
