The feasibility of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for in-line monitoring of pharmaceutical film coating processes has recently been demonstrated. OCT enables real-time acquisition of high-resolution cross-sectional images of coating layers and computation of coating thickness. In addition, coating quality attributes can be computed based on in-line data. This study assesses the in-line applicability of OCT to various coating functionalities and formulations. Several types of commercial film-coated tablets containing the most common ingredients were investigated. To that end, the tablets were placed into a miniaturized perforated drum. An in-line OCT system was used to monitor the tablet bed. This set-up resembles the final stage of an industrial pan coating process. All investigated coatings were measured, and the coating thickness, homogeneity and roughness were computed. The rotation rate was varied in a range comparable to large-scale coating operations, and no influence on the outcome was observed. The results indicate that OCT can be used to determine end-point and establish in-process control for a wide range of coating formulations. The real-time computation of coating homogeneity and roughness can support process optimization and formulation development.

The aim of this work was to obtain homogenous coatings containing chitosan with different concentrations of titanium nitride particles (TiN). The coatings were deposited via an electrophoretic process on an etched medically pure Ti-6Al-4V alloy. As part of the study, the zeta potential of the suspensions used for EPD coating deposition was measured, allowing for the optimization of process parameters and the assessment of suspension stability.

Patterned solid surfaces with wettability contrast can enhance liquid transport for applications such as electronics thermal management, self-cleaning, and anti-icing. However, prior work has not explored easy and scalable blade-cut masking to impart topography patterned wettability contrast on aluminum (Al), even though Al surfaces are widely used for thermal applications. Here, we demonstrate mask-enabled topography contrast patterning and quantify the resulting accuracy of the topographic pattern resolution, spatial variations in surface roughness, wettability, drop size distribution during dropwise condensation, and thermal emissivity of patterned Al surfaces.

Gamma irradiation is an effective technique for biocomposite films intended for application in tissue engineering (TE) to ensure sterility and patient safety prior to clinical applications. This study proposed a biocomposite film composed of natural polymer chitosan (CS) and synthetic polymer poly-Ɛ-caprolactone (PCL) reinforced with sol-gel-derived bioactive glass (BG) for potential application in TE. The BG/PCL/CS biocomposite film was sterilized using 25 kGy gamma rays, and subsequent changes in its characteristics were analyzed through mechanical and physical assessment, bioactivity evaluation via immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) and biocompatibility examination using human primary dermal fibroblasts (HPDFs).

The sonochemical method is a novel synthesis route that takes advantage of the use of ultrasonic radiation to obtain different nanomaterials with an improvement in the process variables and material characteristics. In this work, two different synthesis routes to obtain a double perovskite structure were compared in detail. The Pechini synthesis method is a widely used and effective way to obtain this kind of structure by the formation of a cross-linked network of metal cations.
