The aphid genus Matsumura in China is reviewed. A total of seven species are recognised using morphological characteristics, including six known species, Mesocallis (Mesocallis) alnicola Ghosh, M. (Paratinocallis) corylicola (Higuchi), M. (M.) pteleae Matsumura, M. (M.) sawashibae (Matsumura), M. (P.) yunnanensis (Zhang) and M. (M.) taoi Quednau, and one new species, M. (M.) platycaryae Qiao, The new species, collected on (Juglandaceae) in Anhui Province, China, is described and illustrated. A key to species from China is presented.

Description of mitochondrial genomes and phylogenetic analysis of Megophthalminae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae).

J Insect Sci

November 2024

Department of Institute of Entomology, Guizhou University, The Provincial Key Laboratory for Agricultural Pest Management Mountainous Region, Guiyang, Guizhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study sequenced and analyzed the mitogenomes of 12 leafhopper species from the subfamily Megophthalminae to understand their phylogenetic relationships.
  • The mitogenomes were found to contain 37 genes with a size range of 15,193 to 15,986 base pairs, exhibiting similar structures and a higher AT content compared to GC.
  • Phylogenetic analyses confirmed that Megophthalminae species form a monophyletic group within the Cicadellidae, emphasizing the influence of natural selection on codon usage bias in their mitochondrial genes.

Article Synopsis
  • Getah virus (GETV) is a mosquito-borne virus that affects horses and pigs, causing symptoms like fever and rash, and has been reported in outbreaks primarily in Asia and Oceania.
  • A new strain of GETV (22IH8) was isolated from mosquitoes in Nagasaki, Japan in 2022, and genetic analysis shows it is more closely related to strains from China than those found in Japan in the past.
  • The current vaccine for horses in Japan (MI-110) is effective against the new strain, suggesting that existing vaccination efforts can still combat this emerging threat.
