Procollagen type I N-propeptide (PINP) and the C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (β-CTX) in blood have been designated as reference bone turnover markers in osteoporosis by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). The IFCC Committee on Bone Metabolism (C-BM) has examined current commercial assays and performed a multicentre study to examine the agreement between assays for PINP and β-CTX in serum and plasma. The results of these studies will inform our work towards the harmonization of PINP assays and the standardization of β-CTX assays in blood, with the development of common calibrators and reference measurement procedures in collaboration with the reagent manufacturing industry. Successful achievement of these goals will help develop universally acceptable practice guidelines for the management of osteoporosis with the inclusion of common reference intervals and treatment targets for PINP and β-CTX.

Objective: Meta-analysis was used to evaluate the effects of an exercise intervention on bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and bone metabolism in adolescents.

Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for RCTs on "exercise, adolescents, BMD, bone metabolism" up to 10 September 2024. Included RCTs focused on effects of exercise on BMC, BMD, and bone metabolism in 10-19 years old, with physical activity as exercise group and daily living/primal exercise as control group.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of prior teriparatide (TPTD) treatment on the effectiveness of romosozumab (ROMO) in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Methods: In this retrospective, case-controlled, multicenter study, 323 postmenopausal patients were initiated ROMO. Of these, 275 were treatment-naïve, and 48 were switched from TPTD, with uninterrupted ROMO treatment for 12 months.

Unlabelled: This study examines how power training affects estimated bone strength, revealing that females benefit more than males, especially in the upper limbs (radius). These findings highlight the importance of designing sex-specific exercise programs to enhance bone health. Further research is needed to optimize training duration and address site-specific differences.

Effects of fish oil supplementation on bone turnover markers in depression: a pilot study.

Front Nutr

December 2024

The National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders and Beijing Key Laboratory of Mental Disorders and Beijing Institute for Brain Disorders Center of Schizophrenia, Beijing Anding Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Background And Objective: There is a close correlation between bone loss, depression, and antidepressants. N-3 PUFA supplementation has been considered an effective add-on therapeutic approach in ameliorating bone loss and relieving depression. However, the adjunctive effect of n-3 PUFA on bone metabolism in participants with depression is still unknown.

Context: Individually, bone resorption or formation markers do not reflect bone balance.

Objective: 1) Combine reference bone resorption (collagen type I C-telopeptide, CTX) and formation (procollagen type I propeptide, PINP) markers to estimate balance by creating a bone balance index (BBI); 2) Examine associations of BBI, CTX, or PINP with bone mineral density (BMD) change.

Design: Mixed effects linear regression quantified associations of BBI, CTX, or PINP with BMD change rate.
