The chest radiograph in brucellosis.

Clin Radiol

Department of Radiology, King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Published: January 1988

A retrospective study of chest radiographs in patients with brucellosis was undertaken at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh. The commonest presenting symptoms were fever, back and joint pains, excessive sweating, headache, and cough. Different chest radiographic abnormalities were detected, including soft miliary mottling, parenchymal nodules, consolidation, chronic diffuse changes, hilar or paratracheal lymphadenopathy and pneumothorax. Soft miliary mottling and pneumothorax have not been described before. The high incidence of lung abnormalities is most probably due to the chronicity of the disease in the present series.

(and ) are endemic fungi of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Uncomplicated, symptomatic infection most commonly causes a self-limited pneumonia; however, immunocompromised patients can manifest severe pneumonia with an additional risk of dissemination to bone, joints, soft tissues, and in the most severe cases, the central nervous system. In 2020, clinicians were challenged with a previously unseen volume of acute respiratory complaints as a result of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic.

In 1973, analysis of the mummified remains of a young boy dated to 700AD and from the Late Nasca period (Peru) identified (i) chronic Pott's disease, leading to loss of lower body mobility, and (ii) acute miliary tuberculosis, affecting most organs and the immediate cause of death (Allison et al., 1973). This report was the first to establish, beyond dispute, the presence of tuberculosis in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans.

Papillary adenocarcinoma of the lungs is the most common primary lung adenocarcinoma, with the feature of papillary-like structure formation by cells. A dog was presented with the primary complaint of vomiting, hyporexia and increased respiratory effort. Thoracic radiography revealed increased soft tissue radiopacity of the right cranial lung lobe suggestive of possible consolidation or collapsed lung lobe, with generalised miliary nodular pattern throughout the other lung fields.
