Background: Health observatory (HO) models are helpful in gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and circulating reliable and quality information on population health and health service delivery. In this study, we proposed an HO conceptual model to enhance seafarer's health, which subjects to disease trends.

Methods: Three methods were followed during the study: a systematic collection of seafarer's health data from the Centro Internazionale Radio Medico (C.I.R.M.) repository, an integrative review of existing seafarer's policy, and both open and closed questionnaires were distributed to stakeholders to develop clinical knowledge. C.I.R.M. is the Italian Telemedical Maritime Assistance Service (TMAS). A three-layer HO framework was developed, and each layer had its components and functionalities. The proposed HO model integrated with the outcomes of the mentioned methods was working as the origin of the framework. In this way, we can design a standard infrastructure in ships and risk assessment conduction.

Background: Health systems across Europe are facing a workforce crisis, with some experiencing severe shortages of doctors. In response, many are exploring greater task-sharing, across established professions, such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, with patients and carers, and with new occupational groups, in particular ones that can assist doctors and relieve their workload.

Case Presentation: In the early 2000s the United Kingdom created a new occupational role, that of physician assistant.

Introduction: Medicare's Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) is a logical opportunity for early detection of cognitive impairment, but recent data for uptake and cognitive assessments during it are lacking.

Methods: We surveyed Medicare beneficiaries of a nationally representative panel about use of AWV and cognitive assessments and analyzed associations between uptake and beneficiaries' characteristics.

Results: Of 1871 participants, 80% had an AWV, among whom 31% underwent formal cognitive testing, 35% were asked about memory problems, including 15% having both.

Large-scale and long-term wildlife research and monitoring using camera traps: a continental synthesis.

Biol Rev Camb Philos Soc

January 2025

Wildlife Observatory of Australia (WildObs), Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF), Brisbane, Queensland, 4072, Australia.

Camera traps are widely used in wildlife research and monitoring, so it is imperative to understand their strengths, limitations, and potential for increasing impact. We investigated a decade of use of wildlife cameras (2012-2022) with a case study on Australian terrestrial vertebrates using a multifaceted approach. We (i) synthesised information from a literature review; (ii) conducted an online questionnaire of 132 professionals; (iii) hosted an in-person workshop of 28 leading experts representing academia, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and government; and (iv) mapped camera trap usage based on all sources.

Understanding health systems as comprising interacting elements of hardware and software acknowledges health systems as complex adaptive systems (CAS). Hardware represents the concrete components of systems, whereas software represents the elements which influence actions and underpin relationships, such as processes, values and norms As a specific call for research on health system software was made in 2011, we conducted a qualitative scoping review considering how and for what purpose the concept has been used since then. Our overall purpose was to synthesise current knowledge and generate lessons about how to deepen research on, and understanding of, health system software.
