Published: January 2021

An efficient and novel method for regioselective hydroxydifluoroacetamidation of alkenes with bromodifluoroacetamides has been achieved via a tandem radical pathway mediated by photoredox catalysis under metal-free conditions. This transformation proceeded smoothly in the presence of Rhodamine 6G, affording a series of α,α-difluoro-γ-hydroxyacetamides in moderate to excellent yields. The significant advantages of this protocol are the low-cost photocatalyst, readily available starting materials, synthetic convenience, and wide functional group compatibility.

Background:  All recent advances in healthcare, including diagnostics, surveillance, management, and disease prevention, have depended on good-quality research that has brought new information to light. Therefore, in Pakistan, it is important to develop good research skills as, for many years, our physicians have relied on research knowledge from the Western world, which does not necessarily provide solutions to a developing country. Considering the gap in research knowledge among young doctors, the study was planned to compare the research knowledge of postgrad trainees of clinical and basic health sciences (BHS) of private tertiary care hospitals in Karachi.

Oblique plane microcopy (OPM), a variant of light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM), enables rapid volumetric imaging without mechanically scanning the sample or an objective. In an OPM, the sample space is mapped to a distortion free image space via remote focusing, and the oblique light-sheet plane is mapped via a tilted tertiary imaging system onto a camera. As a result, the 3D point-spread function and optical transfer function are tilted to the optical axis of the tertiary imaging system.

The precise control of browning and enhancement of Maillard reaction kinetics to improve the surface functionality and nutrient encapsulation efficiency of soy proteins remains a significant challenge. This research presents an ultrasound-assisted cyclic reaction method (1-7 cycles) to synthesize soy protein isolate/dextran (SPI/D) conjugates with enhanced grafting degree and functionality during the Maillard reaction. The technique significantly increased the grafting degree to 65.

Background: There is a need to expand eligibility criteria for lung cancer screening beyond age and smoking history. In this study, we sought to assess whether light-or-never-smokers and heavy smokers differ in molecular and immunologic markers based on conventional lung cancer screening criteria.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of lung cancer cases from 2005 to 2018 at a tertiary Canadian institution.
