Article Abstract

Punicic acid (PA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (18:3 n-5), which is classified as a conjugated linolenic acid. PA is also referred as a "super CLnA" whose effect is even more potent than that of an ordinary CLnA. It is found mainly in the seeds of pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum) and Trichoxanthes kirilowii and some other minor sources. It possesses a wide array of biological properties including antidiabetic, antiobesity, antiproliferative, and anticarcinogenic activity against various forms of cancer. In spite of this, PA has not been explored as a nutraceutical or as an ingredient of food products which can be aimed at specific consumer target groups. This review details the various health-beneficial properties of PA and explores the possibilities of its utilization as an active ingredient in various food products.

Determination of main lipids and volatile compounds in unconventional cold-pressed seed oils through chromatographic techniques.

J Food Sci

January 2025

Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, Messina Institute of Technology, University of Messina, Messina, Italy.

The purpose of this study was to characterize unconventional cold-pressed seed oils (rosehip, strawberry, blackcurrant, carrot, plum, pomegranate, radish, and raspberry) as novel alternative edible oil source. A chemical characterization of different lipid components (total fatty acid composition, triacylglycerols, and vitamin E) and volatiles responsible for the particular aroma of these oils was reported. All the oils showed a content of unsaturated fatty acids, mainly oleic, linoleic, and α-linolenic acid, that potentially contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, in the range of 80%-90%.

Objectives: The concept of beauty from within is a growing trend in the market and people now look for oral supplements that can enhance the well-being of skin from within. Within this principle, a proprietary pomegranate extract (Grantria), standardized to ellagic acid, punicic acid and punicalagin, was developed using ADOP (Advanced Oil-Powder) technology and was clinically evaluated for its efficacy and safety in healthy adults.

Methods: This evaluation was carried out as a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study for 60 days at a daily dose of 300 mg.

Microplate spectrophotometric method for regioselective lipase screening using structured triglycerides with punicic acid as probe.

Biotecnología Industrial, Centro de Investigación y Asistencia en Tecnología y Diseño del Estado de Jalisco, CIATEJ, 45019, Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. Electronic address:

In this study, we propose a continuous assay that provides a high-throughput, efficient method for screening the regioselectivity of lipases at the sn-1,3 and sn-2 positions on triacylglycerols (TAGs). This assay measures the specific hydrolysis rates at the primary and secondary positions of TAGs derivates containing oleic (O) and punicic (P) acids. The method is based on the absorbance ratio of released punicic acid from the hydrolysis of sn-POP (sn-1,3 regiospecific lipases) and sn-OPO (sn-2 regiospecific lipases).

The pursuit of nutraceuticals to improve the quality of life for patients with neurodegenerative conditions is a dynamic field within neuropharmacology. Unfortunately, many nutraceuticals that show promise in preclinical studies fail to demonstrate significant clinical benefits in human trials, leading to their exclusion as therapeutic options. This discrepancy may stem from the categorical interpretation of preclinical and clinical results.
