AI Article Synopsis

  • Genomic analysis of an invasive marine snail from Elkhorn Slough in California led to the assembly of its complete mitochondrial genome, which measures 16,095 base pairs and includes various genes like rRNA, protein-coding, and tRNA.
  • The organization and gene content of this mitogenome match those found in the Turritellidae and Pachychilidae families, indicating a close evolutionary relationship.
  • Phylogenetic analysis confirms it belongs to a clade with these families within the Cerithioidea superfamily, and similar genetic sequences were found in invasive populations from California and British Columbia, as well as native populations from Japan, highlighting the utility of mitogenome sequencing for classification and evolutionary studies.

Article Abstract

Genomic analysis of the invasive marine snail from Elkhorn Slough, Moss Landing, California, USA using 150 bp paired-end Illumina sequences resulted in the assembly of its complete mitogenome. The mitogenome is 16,095 bp in length and contains 2 rRNA, 13 protein-coding, and 22 tRNA genes (GenBank Accession MN557850). Gene content and organization of are identical to the Turritellidae and Pachychilidae. The phylogenetic analysis of resolves it in a fully supported clade with these same two families in the superfamily Cerithioidea. Nucleotide BLAST searches of the Elkhorn Slough gene of yielded identical sequences from invasive populations from California and British Columbia, and native populations from northeastern and central Japan. These data show that mitogenome sequencing is a useful tool for studying the classification and phylogenetic history Cerithioidea.
