Published: December 2020

Epigenetics, including DNA methylation, histone modification, and posttranscriptional regulation of microRNAs, is the study of heritable changes in gene expression that do not include DNA-sequence alterations. Epigenetics has become a new strategy for basic and clinical research on acupuncture in the last decade. The aim of this research update was to summarize the pigenetic mechanisms of angiogenesis induced by acupuncture treatment in ischemic heart diseases. The current authors' group has been working to illustrate the mechanism of acupuncture from an epigenetics perspective, which has shed new lights on the mechanisms and applications of acupuncture in cardiovascular diseases. This article summarizes the group's new findings in animal models as well as in patients with chronic stable angina. Progress since 2011 in other teams' research in this field is also discussed in this article. Acupuncture could regulate histone modifications and could rescue patients who sustain ischemic injuries. This treatment could possibly work through promoting angiogenesis.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is associated with recurrent pregnancy morbidity, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We performed multifaceted characterization of the biological and transcriptomic signatures of mouse placenta and uterine natural killer (uNK) cells in APS. Histological analysis of APS placentas unveiled placental abnormalities, including disturbed angiogenesis, occasional necrotic areas, fibrin deposition, and nucleated red blood cell enrichment.

Exosomes derived from umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells promote healing of complex perianal fistulas in rats.

Stem Cell Res Ther

National Colorectal Disease CenterNanjing Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, 210022, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China.

Background: Complex perianal fistulas, challenging to treat and prone to recurrence, often require surgical intervention that may cause fecal incontinence and lower quality of life due to large surgical wounds and potential sphincter damage. Human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) and their exosomes (hUCMSCs-Exo) may promote wound healing.

Methods: This study assessed the efficacy, mechanisms, and safety of these exosomes in treating complex perianal fistulas in SD rats.

Litter size in pigs is affected by factors such as ovulation number, embryonic survival, and uterine environment conditions. Endometrial epithelial and stromal cells represent the first site of contact between the embryo and sows; therefore, dynamic changes in the growth and development of these cells are among the major factors affecting the intrauterine environment and implantation. Bone morphogenetic protein receptor type-1B (BMPR1B) is a receptor of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family that has been identified as a candidate gene for reproductive traits in pigs.

Exploring the ncRNA landscape in exosomes: Insights into wound healing mechanisms and therapeutic applications.

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Raebareli (NIPER-R), Transit Campus, Bijnor-Sisendi Road, Sarojini Nagar, Near CRPF Base Camp, Lucknow, UP 226002, India. Electronic address:

Exosomal non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including miRNAs, lncRNAs, and circRNAs, have emerged as crucial modulators in cellular signaling, influencing wound healing processes. Stem cell-derived exosomes, which serve as vehicles for these ncRNAs, show remarkable therapeutic potential due to their ability to modulate wound healing stages, from initial inflammation to collagen formation. These ncRNAs act as molecular signals, regulating gene expression and protein synthesis necessary for cellular responses in healing.
