Water dispersible silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) showing blue fluorescence were synthesized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as silicon source. Based on the synthesized SiQDs as the photoluminescence unit, MnO nanosheets (NS) as the quencher, a "switch-on" fluorescence assay for the determination of ascorbic acid (AA) was designed. The fluorescence of SiQDs can be effectively quenched by MnO NS because of the internal filtration effect. In the presence of AA, MnO is reduced to Mn, so that the fluorescence of SiQDs is partially recovered. The recovered fluorescence intensity was related to the concentration of AA. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the linear response range of the assay to AA is 1-80 µM, and the detection limit is 0.48 µM. The method for the determination of AA has the advantages of simple, low cost, good selectivity and sensitivity. The assay has been successfully applied to the quantification of AA in beverage (mizone) samples, which proves the practicability of the assay.

A fluorescence probe for "switch-on" detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was developed based on Au nanoclusters anchored MnO nanosheets (Au NCs-MnO NSs), which were synthesized using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as template through a simple one-pot approach. In the sensing system, MnO NSs function as both energy acceptors and target identifiers, effectively quenches the fluorescence of Au NCs via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The presence of ALP catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate (AAP) to ascorbic acid (AA), reducing MnO NSs to Mn and facilitate the fluorescence recovery of Au NCs.

A novel probe NIR8 decorated with colorimetric, fluorometric, turn-on, and NIR properties was designed and synthesized using the chromenylium-cyanine platform for sensitive and selective quantification of Hg in real samples. The interaction between the probe and Hg resulted in the opening of the closed spirolactam ring of the chromenylium-cyanine platform, leading to a notable color shift from yellow to green. Concurrently, ratiometric spectral changes at 380 and 725 nm for UV-Vis and signal enhancement at 755 nm for fluorescence were observed.

The fabrication of self-reporting photosensitizers (PSs), enabling real-time evaluation of the extent of elimination of cancer cells, holds significant scientific importance in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) process. To address the intrinsic challenge of the short-wavelength light source, this work proposed an innovative approach of rational design second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) light-excited fluorescent PS systems (named , , and , respectively) through modulating aggregation and deaggregation based on assembling strategy. Therein, the suitable interplanar distance of adjacent linked with C-H···π interactions was an idea for relieving compact π···π packing for fluorescent imaging as well as elevating the spin-orbit coupling for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation.

The determination of isoquinoline alkaloids (IQAs) is crucial for maximizing the pharmacological benefits of Rhizoma coptidis (RC). In this study, the dendritic silica sphere (dSiO) was covalently modified with cyanuric chloride (CNCl) to synthesize a porous dNSiO-CNCl NP. The fluorescence of berberine (Ber), palmatine (Pal), coptisine (Cop), and jatrorrhizine (Jat) was remarkably enhanced by dNSiO-CNCl NP for at least 38-fold, inspiring the accurate determination of the isoquinoline total alkaloids (IQTAs) in RC using fluorometry.
