A phylogenomic analysis based on 107 single-copy core genes revealed that three strains from sugar-rich environments, i.e. LMG 1728, LMG 1731 and LMG 22058, represented a single, novel lineage with as nearest validly named neighbour. OrthoANIu and digital DNA-DNA hybridization analyses among these strains and type strains confirmed that the three strains represented a novel species. Biochemical characteristics and MALDI-TOF mass spectra allowed differentiation of this novel species from the type strains of and other closely related species. We therefore propose to classify strains LMG 1728, LMG 1731 and LMG 22058 in the novel species sp. nov., with LMG 1728 (=CECT 30142) as the type strain.

Field studies of social behaviour are challenging due to the need to record or infer interactions between multiple individuals, often under suboptimal environmental conditions or with potential disturbance by observers. Due to the limited field techniques available, we present a novel method to quantify social behaviours in the field by comparing the counts of individuals caught in traps across multiple locations sampled simultaneously. The distribution of individuals between traps gives the extent of aggregation, and phenotypic data allow for inference of non-random assortment.

Introduction: In response to continued public health emergency of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a significant key strategy is the discovery of novel mycobacterial efflux-pump inhibitors (EPIs) as potential adjuvants in combination drug therapy. Interest in identifying new chemotypes which could potentially synergize with the existing antibiotics and can be deployed as part of a combination therapy. This strategy could delay the emergence of resistance to existing antibiotics and increase their efficacy against resistant strains of mycobacterial species.
