Spontaneous Bubble Growth Inside High-Saturation-Vapor-Pressure and High-Air-Solubility Liquids and Emulsion Droplets.

Langmuir

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Sofia University, 1 James Bourchier Avenue, Sofia 1164, Bulgaria.

Spontaneous bubble growths in liquids are usually triggered by rapid changes in pressure or temperature that can lead to liquid gas supersaturation. Here, we report alternative scenarios of the spontaneous growths of bubbles inside a high-saturation-vapor-pressure and high-air-solubility perfluorocarbon liquid (PP1) that were observed under ambient quiescent conditions. First, we investigate spontaneous bubble growth inside the single PP1 phase, which was left to evaporate freely.

Article Synopsis
  • Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent pollutants that have become a focus for regulatory action, leading to increased use of shorter-chain PFAS due to restrictions on long-chain types.
  • A new liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system is developed that uses a combination of large volume injection and online solid phase extraction to effectively analyze PFAS of varying chain lengths.
  • This innovative LC-MS method, which incorporates multiple columns for separation, demonstrates high sensitivity and is suitable for analyzing PFAS in different water samples, including surface water and sewage.

Nanoscale exopolymer reassembly-trap mechanism determines contrasting PFOS exposure patterns in aquatic animals with different feeding habitats: A nano-visualization study.

J Hazard Mater

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology for Industrial Pollution Control of Zhejiang Province, College of Environment, Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou, China. Electronic address:

The behavior and fate of PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonate) in the aquatic environment have received great attention due to its high toxicity and persistence. The nanoscale supramolecular mechanisms of interaction between PFOS and ubiquitous EPS (exopolymers) remain unclear though EPS have been widely-known to influence the bioavailability of PFOS. Typically, the exposure patterns of PFOS in aquatic animals changed with the EPS-PFOS interaction are not fully understood.

Hydrophobic Coatings with Charge Permeability via Plasma Deposition of Long-Chain Perfluorocarbons.

ACS Appl Energy Mater

July 2024

Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, Flinders University, Bedford Park, South Australia 5042, Australia.

Hydrophobization of nanotextured catalyst materials is a promising route to enhance the yield of N and CO conversion into green fuels. However, these applications require a hydrophobic coating to not only promote air trapping but also allow charge transfer at the electrode-electrolyte interface. In this work, nano thin films with thicknesses as low as 7 nm were deposited from the plasma phase of perfluorohexene, perfluorodecene, and perfluorooctane (PFO) precursors using a mild vacuum and gentle powers.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment pose persistent and complex threats to human and wildlife health. Around the world, PFAS point sources such as military bases expose thousands of populations of wildlife and game species, with potentially far-reaching implications for population and ecosystem health. But few studies shed light on the extent to which PFAS permeate food webs, particularly ecologically and taxonomically diverse communities of primary and secondary consumers.
