The biochar-assisted water electrolysis process for hydrogen gas production is reported. The H generation is performed in a divided electrolysis cell in which the hydrogen evolution reaction occurs on a cathode and ferrous iron oxidation on an anode. Electrochemically produced Fe(III) species are reduced back to ferrous form in a reaction with biochar concentrated in a packed-bed column through which an acidic anolyte (FeCl) solution is continuously recirculated. During the operation of the proposed process with commercial charcoal, the oxidation of carbon resulted in an accumulation of oxygen-containing groups on the carbon surface that leads to charcoal deactivation. Thermal treatment of the charcoal at 250, 350, and 450 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere resulted in reactivation of carbon, and the best results (≈80% reactivation) were achieved after 3 h of treatment at 450 °C. Nine successful cycles of electrolysis-charcoal regeneration were performed in this study. A ≈98% current efficiency for hydrogen production was achieved at a current density of 50 mA/cm. Much higher current densities can be obtained using the proposed technique as the anodic process of ferrous iron oxidation is decoupled from the carbon oxidation process. The CO production rate achieved in this study was up to 98% of a stoichiometric value proposed for the iron-mediated carbon-assisted water electrolysis process.

Due to the limited active sites and poor conductivity, the application of tungsten disulfide (WS) in alkaline water electrolysis remains a challenge. Herein, Ni-WS nanosheet arrays were in situ grown on the carbon fiber paper (Ni-WS/CFP) as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, and the introduction degree of Ni can be regulated by adjusting the electrodeposition time. When the electrodeposition time is 3 min, Ni ions are doped into the lattice of WS, and by prolonging the electrodeposition time to 10 min, the nickel disulfide (NiS) crystal phase is generated to form NiS@WS heterojunction.

Designing efficient Ruthenium-based catalysts as practical anodes is of critical importance in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. Here, we develop a self-assembly technique to synthesize 1 nm-thick rutile-structured high-entropy oxides (RuIrFeCoCrO) from naked metal ions assembly and oxidation at air-molten salt interface. The RuIrFeCoCrO requires an overpotential of 185 mV at 10 m A cm and maintains the high activity for over 1000 h in an acidic electrolyte via the adsorption evolution mechanism.

Dye-sensitization is a promising strategy to improve the light absorption and photoactivity abilities of wide-bandgap semiconductors, like TiO. For effective water-splitting photoanodes with no sacrificial agents, the electrochemical potential of the dye must exceed the thermodynamic threshold needed for the oxygen evolution reaction. This study investigates two promising organic cyanoacrylic dyes, designed to meet that criterion by means of theoretical calculations.

Antibacterial Efficacy Comparison of Electrolytic and Reductive Silver Nanoparticles Against .

The aim of this study was to develop an electrolysis system to produce silver nanoparticles free from toxic gases, as the most common reduction and electrolysis techniques produce nitrogen dioxide (NO) as a byproduct, which is harmful to human health. The new electrolysis system used two identical silver plate electrodes, replacing silver and carbon rods, and used water as the electrolyte instead of silver nitrate (AgNO) solution since AgNO is the source of NO. The electrolytic silver nanoparticles (ESNs) produced by the new system were characterized and compared with reductive silver nanoparticles (RSNs).

Developing nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts with exceptional activity and durability for water electrolysis remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst composed of sulfur-doped vanadium metal-organic frameworks (S@V-MOF) integrated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to promote the synergistic effect between S@V-MOF and MWCNTs and modulate the electronic structure of the catalyst, which eventually enhanced its electrocatalytic performance. The S@V-MOF/MWCNT catalyst loaded at the Ni foam electrode exhibits remarkable activity for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, requiring overpotentials of 48 and 227 mV, respectively, to reach a current density of 10 mA cm.
