The pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) possesses an exocrine gland associated with its false gill slit pigmentation pattern. The cervical gill slit gland is a compound tubuloalveolar gland that produces a holocrine secretion and displays maturational changes in size and secretory histology. While the morphology of the cervical gill slit gland has been described in detail, to date, the chemical composition of its secretion remains uncharacterized.

Metastatic melanoma with unusual histopathology can be diagnostically challenging. One exceptionally rare cutaneous manifestation of metastases is blue-nevus-like metastatic melanoma (BNLMM). A 74-year-old male presented with a blue-gray lesion on his left helix in the same anatomical region of a previously resected lentigo maligna.

In this work a novel method for synthesis of 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene melanin was presented, as well as the physicochemical properties, molecular structure, and characteristics of the pigment. The proposed synthesis protocol is simple and cost-effective with no enzymes or catalysts needed. The final product is not adsorbed on any surface, since the pigment is the result of autooxidation of 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene.

Shrews are among the most speciose of mammalian clades, but their evolutionary history is poorly understood. Their fossil record is fragmentary and even the anatomy of living groups is not well documented. Here, we incorporate the oldest, most complete fossil shrew yet known into the first phylogenetic analysis of the group to include molecular, morphological and temporal data.
