Barnacles are able to effectively adhere to most surfaces underwater. Dewetting of the corresponding surface prior to the release of their permanent adhesive plays an important role in the attachment process. Possibly, a surface that is able to interfere with this process may have exceptional fouling repellence and fouling release abilities. Therefore, open-pored foams made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were tested together with flat PDMS samples as controls in a 13-week-long field experiment in the Baltic Sea. On a weekly basis, both settlement and fouling density development of the bay barnacle Balanus (=Amphibalanus) improvisus were monitored. The overall settlement was close to zero on PDMS foams and the few attached barnacles were not able to stay on the PDMS foams longer than 1 week after initial settlement. Changes in the stiffness of the PDMS foams did not affect these results. Open-pored PDMS foam systems may be a promising tool in the development of new, innovative antifouling strategies.

In this manuscript, an efficient self-reinforcing technology-solid hot drawing (SHD) technology-was combined with green processing supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO) foaming technology to promote poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) to form an oriented micropore structure. In addition, Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with a high affinity of CO and biological safety, was introduced to enhance the nucleation effect in SC-CO foaming and co-regulate the uniformity of oriented micropores' structure. The results showed that orientation induced PLLA crystallization, so the tensile strength was improved; the maximum tensile strength of the oriented micropores' PLLA reached 151.

Despite the exceptional biocompatibility and degradability of Poly (-lactic acid) (PLLA), its brittleness, low melting strength, and poor bone induction makes it challenging to utilize for bone repair. This study used a simple, efficient solid hot drawing (SHD) method to produce high-strength PLLA, using supercritical CO (SC-CO) foaming technology to give PLLA a bionic microporous structure to enhance its toughness, while precisely controlling micropore homogeneity and improving the melt strength by using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This PDMS-regulated oriented microporous structure resembled that of natural bone, displaying a maximum tensile strength of 165.

The significance of synthetic foams as insulative materials stems from their mechanical and water resistance as well as their cost-effectiveness. Broadly, the design of building envelopes should also consider fire and mold resistance and the impacts on the environment (end of life and compostability). This study addresses these issues considering the ever-increasing demand for sustainable sources to develop highly porous insulative materials.

Emulsion droplets of silicone oil (PDMS) are widely used as antifoaming agents but, in the case of non-aqueous foams, the mechanisms responsible for the bursting of the films separating the bubbles remain unclear. We consider a ternary non-aqueous liquid mixture in which PDMS-rich microdroplets are formed by spontaneous emulsification. In order to quantitatively assess the effect of the emulsified microdroplets, we measure the lifetime of sub-micrometer-thick suspended films of these emulsions as well as the time variations of their thickness profiles.

Hydrophobic nano silica powder is a kind of important synergist to silicone defoaming agents. The large pore volume and branched chain conformation of silica nanoparticles present superior effects on defoaming properties. However, silica nanoparticles synthesized by liquid phase easily aggregate and pore collapse because of their high surface activity and polarity, leading to poorer dispersity and limited practicability.
