Herein, we introduce a comprehensive methodology to map the reactivity of photochemical systems on surfaces. The reactivity of photoreactive groups in solution often departs from their corresponding solution absorption spectra. On surfaces, the relationship between the surface absorption spectra and reactivity remains unexplored. Thus, herein, the reactivity of an -methylbenzaldehyde and a tetrazole, as ligation partners for maleimide functionalized polymers, was investigated when the reactive moieties are tethered to a surface. The ligation reaction of tetrazole functionalized surfaces was found to proceed rapidly leading to high grafting densities, while -methylbenzaldehyde functionalized substrates required longer irradiation times and resulted in lower surface coverage at the same wavelength (330 nm). Critically, wavelength resolved reactivity profiles were found to closely match the surface absorption spectra, contrary to previously reported red shifts in solution for the same chromophores.

-β, β-β' trifused porphyrins incorporating two distinct active methylene groups (MN = malononitrile and IND = 1,3-indanedione) and their corresponding metal complexes with Cu(II) and Zn(II) have been synthesized with good to excellent yields and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and spectrometric methods. Single crystal X-ray analysis of the Zn(II) complex ZnTFPMB(MN) (where TFP = trifused porphyrin and MB = mono benzo) revealed a nonplanar 'armchair' type conformation with a twist angle of 24.10°.

The self-absorption effects observed in the background intensity just above the Si L-emission spectra of Si and β-Si3N4, and the C K-emission spectra of diamond and graphite were examined. Based on comparisons with reported results, the energy positions of absorption edges-representing the bottom of conduction bands (CB)-were assigned. The self-absorption profiles in the background intensities were consistent with previously reported data.

This brief report aimed to investigate the optical absorbance spectra of normal, dysplastic, and malignant epithelial cell lines under normal and nutritional stress conditions. HaCAT (keratinocyte), DOK (oral dysplastic), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines (CA1, Luc4, SCC9) were evaluated regarding their optical absorbance after culture with 0-10% fetal bovine serum. Absorbance measurements indicated that HaCAT under serum starvation exhibited higher absorbance at blue (430 nm) and near-infrared (906 nm) wavelengths.

Cathodic corrosion is an electrochemical phenomenon that etches metals at moderately negative potentials. Although cathodic corrosion probably occurs by forming a metal-containing anion, such intermediate species have not yet been observed. Here, aiming to resolve this long-standing debate, our work provides such evidence through X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

β-carbolines (βCs) represent a large family of bioactive alkaloids, including norharmane and normelinonine F, known for their diverse pharmacological activities. The effects of these alkaloids may depend, among other factors, on their delivery, accumulation in different subcellular compartments, and interactions with biomacromolecules such as serum albumins. In this study, we investigated the pH dependence of the interactions between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and four βCs (norharmane, normelinonine F, and their corresponding N(9)-methyl derivatives) using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, combined with multivariate analysis and molecular docking.
