The year 2020 will be remembered for the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which has been the greatest ever healthcare crisis for the National Health Service. In Spain there have been more than 1,556,730 cases and 42,619 deaths, as well as 20,268 elderly people who have died in nursing homes and 63,000 healthcare professionals infected (as of November 2020).

Spirals are a special class of excitable waves that have its significance in the understanding of cardiac arrests and neuronal transduction. In a theoretical model of the chemical Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction system, we explore the dynamics of the spatiotemporal patterns that emerge out of competing reaction and diffusion phenomena. By modifying the existing mathematical models of the reaction kinetics, we have been able to explore the explicit effect of hydrogen ion concentration in the system, so as to achieve various regimes of wave activity, from stable spirals to oscillation death.

The corrosion of low-alloy steel in ethanolamine solution, simulating steam generator chemistry, is studied by in situ chronopotentiometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined with ex situ analysis of the obtained oxide films and model calculations. Hydrodynamic calculations of the proposed setup to study flow-assisted corrosion demonstrate that turbulent conditions are achieved. Quantum chemical calculations indicate the adsorption orientation of ethanolamine on the oxide surface.

Adaptive optics (AO) systems are capable of correcting wavefront aberrations caused by transmission media or defects in optical systems. The deformable mirror (DM) plays a crucial role as a component of the adaptive optics system. In this study, our focus is on analyzing the ability of a 97-element MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) DM to correct blurred images of extended sources affected by atmospheric turbulence.

Brown carbon (BrC) has been recognized as an important light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosol, yet understanding of its influence on regional climate and air quality has been lacking, mainly due to the ignorance of regional coupled meteorology-chemistry models. Besides, assumptions about its emissions in previous explorations might cause large uncertainties in estimates. Here, we implemented a BrC module into the WRF-Chem model that considers source-dependent absorption and avoids uncertainties caused by assumptions about emission intensities.

Leading-edge serrations inspired by owls exhibit the capability to control airfoil-turbulence interaction noise, but the design principle of the serration shape is still an open issue. To this end, we designed five types of serration shapes with different combinations of curvature, namely, triangular, ogee, anti-ogee, feather-like, and anti-feather-like. These curves are applied to serrated modifications with different bluntness levels (sharp or blunt) and amplitudes (0.
