Allyl and vinyl radicals are important intermediates in diverse areas of chemistry, ranging from combustion to synthesis. However, questions remain about the competitive formation of these radicals from allenes. Here, we present a study of prototypical allyl and vinyl radicals formed by H atom addition to allenes. They were studied by forming the analogous muonium adducts because muonium (Mu) behaves as a light isotope of hydrogen, and muoniated species can be characterized by muon spin spectroscopy (μSR). Two techniques were employed: transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-μSR) and muon level-crossing resonance (μLCR), which allow for the measurement of muon hyperfine constants (hfcs) and other nuclear hfcs, respectively, and thus aid identification of the formed radicals. TF-μSR has already been used to determine that two radicals are formed by Mu addition to 1,1-dimethylallene, but μLCR techniques were undeveloped at the time of that study, so assignments were based on electron spin resonance (ESR) data of similar allyl and vinyl radicals. We report here the μSR of multiple radicals detected from positive muon irradiation of 1,1-dimethylallene and 1-methoxyallene in solution. The radicals were identified by comparison of muon and proton hfcs with ESR data and the results of density functional theory calculations. The conclusion is that muonium (and by extension, the H atom) can add to all three carbons of the allene system, albeit with preference for the central carbon.

Chemicals in plastics raise significant concerns for potential adverse environmental and health impacts. However, dissipation kinetics and fluxes of chemicals from outdoor plastic products remain largely uncharacterized, hindering the accurate assessment of their environmental exposure. This study quantified outdoor dissipation profiles for 20 "priority" chemicals, including sunscreens (benzophenone, benzophenone-3, octyl salicylate, etc.

Nanoporous anodic alumina (nPAA) films formed on aluminum in lower aliphatic carboxylic acids exhibit blue self-coloring and characteristic properties such as photoluminescence (PL), electroluminescence, and electron spin resonance. The blue colors are seemingly originated from the adsorbed radicals incorporating into the oxide during the aluminum anodization. However, there is lack of reports revealing the detailed activation mechanism of the adatoms in the complexes.

Achieving effective interfacial compatibility between hydrophilic cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and hydrophobic vegetable oil polymers (VOPs) remained a significant challenge. To address this issue, we developed a one-component nanocomposite (OCN) based on hyperbranched CNF-grafted VOPs. Rigid precursor initiator poly (vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVBC) was first grafted onto the CNF surface via phase-transfer catalysis, forming a branched macroinitiator (CNF-g-PVBC) with chlorine contents ranging from 4.

It is still a challenge to use a fast and efficient method for preserving fresh-cut fruits from browning. To address this problem, we developed konjac glucomannan (KGM) incorporated with elderberry anthocyanins (EA) to form film-forming solution (KEA) combined with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solution to produce KEA/PVP fiber films by microfluidic blow spinning (MBS). The introduction of PVP and EA improved the spinnability and function properties of KGM-based fiber film, respectively.

A Fe-catalyzed hydrocyclization reaction of unactivated alkenes was developed, utilizing PhSiH as the hydrogen source, yielding 2,3-dihydroquinazolinone (DHQZ) derivatives in moderate to good yields. Notably, when the substrate was switched to -cyano--(2-(prop-1-en-2-yl)phenyl)benzamides, the reaction yielded only the unreduced products. Mechanistic studies revealed that the intramolecular addition of the in situ formed radical to the unactivated alkene results in the formation of the fused ring.
