We disclose the method to obtain polarization insensitive phase-only modulation that preserves both the state and the degree of polarization of light modulated using a medium with controlled birefringence. We find that, in the double-pass configuration involving reflection from the Faraday rotator mirror, such a medium acts as the phase-only modulator. The experimental data measured in the Michelson-interferometer-based setup for deformed-helix ferroelectric liquid crystal cells are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. For such cells, we experimentally demonstrate high-frequency (4 kHz modulation rate) 2 phase-only light modulation governed by the average phase shift and solve the problem of optical axes switching.

Transmission matrix measurements of multimode fibers are now routinely performed in numerous laboratories, enabling control of the electric field at the distal end of the fiber and paving the way for the potential application to ultrathin medical endoscopes with high resolution. The same concepts are applicable to other areas, such as space division multiplexing, targeted power delivery, fiber laser performance, and the general study of the mode coupling properties of the fiber. However, the process of building an experimental setup and developing the supporting code to measure the fiber's transmission matrix remains challenging and time consuming, with full details on experimental design, data collection, and supporting algorithms spread over multiple papers or lacking in detail.

Effects of temperature on physiology, transcription, and toxin production of the harmful benthic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus belizeanus.

Mar Pollut Bull

State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution, Department of Chemistry, City University of Hong Kong, 999077, Hong Kong, China; Research Centre for the Oceans and Human Health, City University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute, Shenzhen 518057, China. Electronic address:

Benthic dinoflagellates constitute a group of microalgae that inhabit the ocean floor, adhering to substrates such as coral, seagrasses, and sand. Certain species within this group have the potential to produce toxins. Ocean warming could increase the occurrence of harmful benthic dinoflagellate blooms, which pose a significant threat to coastal ecosystems in tropical and subtropical regions.

Metasurface-Based Image Classification Using Diffractive Deep Neural Network.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

November 2024

International School of Microelectronics, Dongguan University of Technology, Dongguan 523808, China.

The computer-assisted inverse design of photonic computing, especially by leveraging artificial intelligence algorithms, offers great convenience to accelerate the speed of development and improve calculation accuracy. However, traditional thickness-based modulation methods are hindered by large volume and difficult fabrication process, making it hard to meet the data-driven requirements of flexible light modulation. Here, we propose a diffractive deep neural network (DNN) framework based on a three-layer all-dielectric phased transmitarray as hidden layers, which can perform the classification of handwritten digits.

Article Synopsis
  • * The proposed method involves breaking down a hologram into two phase-only holograms: one acts as ciphertext and the other as a key, ensuring that the holographic image can only be reconstructed when these two are used together.
  • * Additionally, a watermark is embedded in the ciphertext to protect copyright, combining encryption and watermarking for high security in transmitting holographic images.

Two-photon microscopy (TPM) has a wide range of applications in the biomedical field. Two-photon multi-focus microscopy (TPMM) greatly improves the imaging speed by combining TPM with multi-focus technology. Therefore, TPMM based on spatial light modulator (SLM) has greater advantages in generating multi-focus point (MFP) with uniform intensity and flexible position than to other schemes.
