Mineralization crystallization is considered to be the initial stage of stone formation. However, the formation of crystals and subsequent cell damage have rarely been investigated. An oxidatively damaged cell model was established using oxalic acid to injure human proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2). Subsequently, CaOx crystallization was induced by adding 2.0 mmol/L sodium oxalate solution. We compared the synergistic effects of PYPs with molecular weights of 49.54 kDa (PYP1) and 4.02 kDa (PYP2) and KCit on the inhibition of CaOx crystallization and studied the nucleation, growth, and retention process of CaOx crystals on the cell surface and the subsequent damage of the formed crystals to the cells. Normal HK-2 cells mainly induced the formation of CaOx dihydrate (COD), whereas the damaged cells mainly induced the formation of CaOx monohydrate (COM) crystals. Under the protection of PYPs, the state of cells was improved, and the proportion of COD crystals in the formed crystals increased. Small-molecular-weight PYP2 exhibited better abilities of inhibiting CaOx crystallization and improving cell state compared with PYP1. Under the synergistic effects of PYPs and KCit, the number of formed crystals was obviously reduced, and the size was obviously decreased. PYPs can repair damaged cells and inhibit the conversion of COD phase to COM phase. KCit can obviously inhibit the nucleation of CaOx crystal and reduce the amount of crystal formation. The repair of damaged cells by PYPs and the synergistic inhibition of CaOx crystallization by PYPs and KCit reduce cell damage and crystal formation on the cell surface. By simultaneously repairing damaged cells and inhibiting crystallization, this strategy is expected to exert a desirable effect in preventing the formation and recurrence of stones.

The use of active packaging made from biodegradable polymers can contribute to the environment and to the food industry by increasing the shelf life of their products. This study aimed to produce chitosan-based films incorporated with the invertase enzyme (1, 2, 5, 9, and 10 %) as an alternative to avoid sucrose crystallization in the confectionery industry. The optimum activity of the invertase enzyme was observed at 55 °C and pH 5, thus, the films made with the film-forming solution adjusted to pH 5 and dried at 55 °C were compared with those without pH adjustment and dried at room temperature.

A new gene coding for an iron-containing enzyme was identified in the genome of Acinetobacter radioresistens. Bioinformatics analysis allowed the assignment of the protein to DyP peroxidases, due to the presence of conserved residues involved in heme binding and catalysis. Moreover, Ar-DyP is located in an operon coding also for other enzymes involved in iron uptake and regulation.

Circulating sexual stages of ) can be transmitted from humans to mosquitoes, thereby furthering the spread of malaria in the population. It is well established that antibodies can efficiently block parasite transmission. In search for naturally acquired antibodies targets on sexual stages, we established an efficient method for target-agnostic single B cell activation followed by high-throughput selection of human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) reactive to sexual stages of in the form of gametes and gametocyte extracts.

Paddlewheel-type diruthenium(II,II) complexes are paramagnetic with two unpaired electrons ( = 1) and can be utilized as versatile building blocks for higher-order structures, such as supramolecular complexes, coordination polymers, and metal-organic frameworks, although they are generally highly air-sensitive. In this study, we developed an air-stable paddlewheel-type diruthenium(II,II) complex with two electron-withdrawing 1,8-naphthyridine-2-carboxylate (npc) ligands, [Ru(μ-npc)(OCMe)] (1). The two acetate ligands in 1 can be replaced by other carboxylate ligands; the solvothermal reactions of 1 with benzoic acid (HOCPh) yields the heteroleptic [Ru(μ-npc)(OCPh)] (2), whereas its reaction with 1,8-naphthyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Hnpc) produces the homoleptic [Ru(μ-npc)(η-npc)] (3).

The amorphous/crystalline (A/C) assembly in molecular solids has a direct bearing on their attributes and applications, including mechanical, pharmaceutical, electronic and photophysical. A systematic analysis of the molecular features and interactions that determine the predilection towards the A, C or bi-stable A-C states is critical. This fundamental problem is addressed through an exhaustive investigation of a large family of alkoxyalkyl diaminodicyanoquinodimethanes (ROR'-DADQs); enhancement of their fluorescence from the solution, to the A, to the C state serves as an excellent signature of the phase preference and temporal stability.
