The authors report a case of a synthetic fiber granuloma to demonstrate the challenges in diagnosing these lesions and to highlight their histopathologic features. This is the first report in the literature to use histopatho-logic and immunofluorescence studies to characterize the subtype and distribution of macrophages in synthetic fiber granuloma. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2020;57:e92-e95.].

This review explores the impact of various additives on the mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) filaments used in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing. While PLA is favored for its biodegradability and ease of use, its inherent limitations in strength and heat resistance necessitate enhancements through additives. The impact of natural and synthetic fibers, inorganic particles, and nanomaterials on the mechanical properties, printability, and overall functionality of PLA composites was examined, indicating that fiber reinforcements, such as carbon and glass fibers, significantly enhance tensile strength and stiffness, while natural fibers contribute to sustainability but may compromise mechanical stability.

Numerical Modelling of Hybrid Polymer Composite Frame for Selected Construction Parts and Experimental Validation of Mechanical Properties.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Material Science and Manufacturing Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Kamycka 129, 16500 Prague, Czech Republic.

This article is a numerical and experimental study of the mechanical properties of different glass, flax and hybrid composites. By utilizing hybrid composites consisting of natural fibers, the aim is to eventually reduce the percentage usage of synthetic or man-made fibers in composites and obtain similar levels of mechanical properties that are offered by composites using synthetic fibers. This in turn would lead to greener composites being utilized.

Histology Assessment of Chitosan-Polyvinyl Alcohol Scaffolds Incorporated with CaO Nanoparticles.

Molecules

January 2025

Grupo Biomateriales Dentales, Escuela de Odontología, Universidad del Valle, Calle 4B # 36-00, Cali 760001, Colombia.

Scaffolds for regenerative therapy can be made from natural or synthetic polymers, each offering distinct benefits. Natural biopolymers like chitosan (CS) are biocompatible and biodegradable, supporting cell interactions, but lack mechanical strength. Synthetic polymers like polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) provide superior mechanical strength and cost efficiency but are not biodegradable or supportive of cell adhesion.

Diabetic foot, leg ulcers and decubitus ulcers affect millions of individuals worldwide leading to poor quality of life, pain and in several cases to limb amputations. Despite the global dimension of this clinical problem, limited progress has been made in developing more efficacious wound dressings, the design of which currently focusses on wound protection and control of its exudate volume. The present in vitro study systematically analysed seven types of clinically-available wound dressings made of different biomaterial composition and engineering.
