Acute and chronic wounds have varying etiologies and are an economic burden to healthcare systems around the world. The advanced wound care market is expected to exceed $22 billion by 2024. Wound care professionals rely heavily on images and image documentation for proper diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately lack of expertise can lead to improper diagnosis of wound etiology and inaccurate wound management and documentation. Fully automatic segmentation of wound areas in natural images is an important part of the diagnosis and care protocol since it is crucial to measure the area of the wound and provide quantitative parameters in the treatment. Various deep learning models have gained success in image analysis including semantic segmentation. This manuscript proposes a novel convolutional framework based on MobileNetV2 and connected component labelling to segment wound regions from natural images. The advantage of this model is its lightweight and less compute-intensive architecture. The performance is not compromised and is comparable to deeper neural networks. We build an annotated wound image dataset consisting of 1109 foot ulcer images from 889 patients to train and test the deep learning models. We demonstrate the effectiveness and mobility of our method by conducting comprehensive experiments and analyses on various segmentation neural networks. The full implementation is available at https://github.com/uwm-bigdata/wound-segmentation .

Artificial Intelligence-Based Detection and Numbering of Dental Implants on Panoramic Radiographs.

Clin Implant Dent Relat Res

February 2025

SEMRUK Technology Inc., Cumhuriyet Teknokent, Sivas, Turkiye.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based deep learning model for the detection and numbering of dental implants in panoramic radiographs. The novelty of this model lies in its ability to both detect and number implants, offering improvements in clinical decision support for dental implantology.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective dataset of 32 585 panoramic radiographs, collected from patients at Sivas Cumhuriyet University between 2014 and 2024, was utilized.

A 3D decoupling Alzheimer's disease prediction network based on structural MRI.

Health Inf Sci Syst

December 2025

School of Mathematics and Computing, University of Southern Queensland, 487-535 West Street, Toowoomba, QLD 4350 Australia.

Purpose: This paper aims to develop a three-dimensional (3D) Alzheimer's disease (AD) prediction method, thereby bettering current predictive methods, which struggle to fully harness the potential of structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) data.

Methods: Traditional convolutional neural networks encounter pressing difficulties in accurately focusing on the AD lesion structure. To address this issue, a 3D decoupling, self-attention network for AD prediction is proposed.

Golgi protein 73: the driver of inflammation in the immune and tumor microenvironment.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Hangzhou Lin'an Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Affiliated Hospital, Hangzhou City University, Hangzhou, China.

Golgi Protein 73 (GP73) is a Golgi-resident protein that is highly expressed in primary tumor tissues. Initially identified as an oncoprotein, GP73 has been shown to promote tumor development, particularly by mediating the transport of proteins related to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), thus facilitating tumor cell EMT. Though our previous review has summarized the functional roles of GP73 in intracellular signal transduction and its various mechanisms in promoting EMT, recent studies have revealed that GP73 plays a crucial role in regulating the tumor and immune microenvironment.

Objectives: The pairing of immunotherapy and radiotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has shown promise. By combining radiotherapy with immunotherapy, the synergistic effects of these modalities not only bolster antitumor efficacy but also exacerbate lung injury. Consequently, developing a model capable of accurately predicting radiotherapy- and immunotherapy-related pneumonitis in lung cancer patients is a pressing need.
