The impact of Pb on the environment and human health and recent restrictions on its use in electronic devices are generating demand for Pb-free piezoelectric materials. Examples are now available commercially, but the full elastic-piezoelectric-dielectric (EPD) matrices needed for device design, including over a range of operating conditions, have not yet been published. The standard IEEE EPD matrix measurement method needs four sample geometries, making it inconvenient and increasing errors. Here, we present an alternative method combining resonant ultrasound spectroscopy with optimization algorithms to measure the EPD matrix from a single exact cube sample. The Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) and Nelder-Mead (NM) optimizations are compared in refining the independent parameters. Both give convergent solutions, but the LM algorithm is more accurate and efficient. The single-sample approach was used to obtain results from Pb-free NaBiTiO (PIC 700, PI Ceramics, Lederhose, Germany) piezoceramic ( ∞ mm sample symmetry) characterized with the standard IEEE method at ambient temperature and with the single-sample method at ambient temperature and additionally up to 80 °C. The results are validated with the laser Doppler vibrometry via mode shape reconstruction and comparison with finite-element analysis (FEA). They demonstrate that convenient measurement of the EPD matrix of Pb-free materials with temperature dependence is possible, providing a crucial capability for the adoption of these materials in devices.

Poor wear- and corrosion-resistance of 316L SS implants are critical problems in orthopedic implants. This study aims to improve the wear- and corrosion-resistance of 316L SS through surface coating. In this study, a bilayer composite coating consisting of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) as the first layer, and titania (TiO)- and Cu-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (Cu-MBGNs) were deposited as the second layer on a 316L SS electrophoretic deposition (EPD).

Temperature-Responsive Hydrogel System Integrating Wound Temperature Monitoring and On-demand Drug Release for Sequentially Inflammatory Process Regulation of Wound Healing.

National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials, College of Biomedical Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, P. R. China.

Wound healing faces challenges like inflammation, infection, and limited monitoring capabilities, and traditional dressings often lack the ability to promote healing or provide real-time wound status updates. Early pro-inflammatory responses help clear pathogens and damaged tissue, while timely anti-inflammatory modulation aids tissue regeneration, making sequential inflammation regulation crucial. Additionally, wound temperature, a key infection biomarker, enables real-time monitoring for effective management.

In research aimed at improving the brittleness of WER (waterborne epoxy)-modified emulsified asphalt, commonly encountered issues are that the low-temperature performance of this type of asphalt becomes insufficient and the long curing time leads to low early strength. Matrix-emulsified asphalt was modified with WPU (waterborne polyurethane), WER, and DMP-30 (accelerator). Firstly, the performance changes of modified emulsified asphalt at different single-factor dosages were explored through conventional performance tests and assessments of its adhesion, tensile properties, and curing time.

Pollinators provide ecological services essential to maintaining our food supply and propagating natural habitats. Populations are in decline due to environmental stressors including pesticides, pathogens, and habitat loss. To better understand the impacts of pesticide exposures on colony health, a field survey in Ohio, USA was conducted to monitor the potential contamination of honey bee colonies by pesticides.

Macrophage Polarization during MRONJ Development in Mice.

Division of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences, UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Macrophages are important regulators of bone remodeling, and M1 polarization is observed in the setting of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). Here, we characterize the phenotype of macrophages during early stages of MRONJ development in zoledronate (ZA)-treated mice with periodontal disease and explore the role of rosiglitazone, a drug that has been reported to lower the M1/M2 macrophage ratio, in MRONJ burden. Mice received ZA, and experimental periodontal disease (EPD) was induced around their second left maxillary molar.
