AI Article Synopsis

  • We conducted x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies on heterostructures made of topological insulators and the magnetic insulator EuS, focusing on the interface between them.
  • Our analysis showed no substantial induced magnetism in the topological insulators or any increase in magnetic moments from Eu at the interface.
  • The magnetic moments detected in the Bi, Sb, Te, and Se sites were below the XMCD detection limit of approximately 10^{-3} μ_{B}/at.

Article Abstract

We performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on heterostructures comprising topological insulators (TIs) of the (Bi,Sb)_{2}(Se,Te)_{3} family and the magnetic insulator EuS. XMCD measurements allow us to investigate element-selective magnetic proximity effects at the very TI/EuS interface. A systematic analysis reveals that there is neither significant induced magnetism within the TI nor an enhancement of the Eu magnetic moment at such interface. The induced magnetic moments in Bi, Sb, Te, and Se sites are lower than the estimated detection limit of the XMCD measurements of ∼10^{-3}  μ_{B}/at.

Among the magnetocaloric materials featuring first-order phase transitions (FOPT), FeRh is considered as a reference system to study the FOPT because it is a "simple" binary system with a CsCl structure exhibiting a large adiabatic temperature change. Recently, ab initio theory predicted that changes in the Fe/Rh stoichiometry in the vicinity of equiatomic composition strongly influence the FOPT characteristics. However, this theoretical prediction was not clearly verified experimentally.

Mechanism Behind the Enhanced Ferromagnetic Contributions Upon Ru Substitution in CaMnO from X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopies.

We have studied the local structure and electronic and magnetic properties of hybrid improper ferroelectric CaMnO upon Ru substitution at the Mn site by a combination of atomic-selective X-ray absorption spectroscopies in the soft and hard X-ray energy regimes. Ru substitution enhances the macroscopic ferromagnetic contributions, whose origin is here elucidated. In particular, soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) data indicate that the spin moments of Mn and Ru are aligned in opposite directions, with the effective magnetic moments of Ru being about 1 order of magnitude smaller than for Mn.

The decoration of technologically relevant surfaces, such as metal oxides, with Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) constitutes a persistent challenge for the integration of these molecular systems into novel technologies and, in particular, for the development of spintronic and quantum devices. We used UHV thermal sublimation to deposit tetrairon(III) propeller-shaped SMMs (Fe) as a single layer on a TiO ultrathin film grown on Cu(001). The properties of the molecular deposit were studied using a multi-technique approach based on standard topographic and spectroscopic measurements, which demonstrated that molecules remain largely intact upon deposition.

We present a spectroscopic study of the magnetic properties ofFe3-δGeTe2single crystals with varying Fe content, achieved by tuning the stoichiometry of the crystals. We carried out x-ray absorption spectroscopy and analyzed the x-ray circular magnetic dichroism spectra using the sum rules, to determine the orbital and spin magnetic moments of the materials. We find a clear reduction of the spin and orbital magnetic moment with increasing Fe deficiency.

We present the synthesis and magneto-thermal properties of carborane-based lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the formula {[(Ln)(CB-L)(NO)(DMF)]·Solv}, where Ln = Dy or Tb, characterized by dc and ac susceptibility, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and heat capacity measurements. The MOF structure is formed by polymeric 1D chains of Ln ions with three different coordination environments (Ln1, Ln2, Ln3) running along the -axis, linked by carborane-based linkers thus to provide a 3D structure. Static magnetic measurements reveal that these MOFs behave at low temperature as a system of * = 1/2 Ising spins, weakly interacting ferromagnetically along the 1D polymeric chain (/ = +0.
