Ezrin Polarization as a Diagnostic Marker for Circulating Tumor Cells in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Cells

December 2024

Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery, University Hospital Muenster, University of Muenster, Albert-Schweitzer-Campus 1, 48149 Muenster, Germany.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with no precise method for early detection. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) expressing the dynamic polarity of the cytoskeletal membrane protein, ezrin, have been proposed to play a crucial role in tumor progression and metastasis. This study investigated the diagnostic and prognostic potential of polarized circulating tumor cells (p-CTCs) in HCC patients.

Herbivorous insects need to cope with changing host plant biochemistry caused by abiotic and biotic impacts, to meet their dietary requirements. Larvae of the multivoltine European grapevine moth Lobesia botrana, one of the main insect pests in viticulture, feed on both flowers and berries. The nutritional value and defence compounds of these organs are changing with plant phenology and are affected by climate change which may accordingly alter plant-insect interactions.

Aneurysm dome and vessel pressure measurements with coiling, stent assisted coiling and flow diversion.

Acta Neurochir (Wien)

January 2025

Division of Neurosurgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, 110 Francis Street , Boston, MA, 02215, USA.

Background: Variability in long-term endovascular treatment outcomes for intracranial aneurysms has prompted questions regarding the effects of these treatments on aneurysm hemodynamics. Endovascular techniques disrupt aneurysmal blood flow and shear, but their influence on intra-aneurysmal pressure remains unclear. A better understanding of aneurysm pressure effects may aid in predicting outcomes and guiding treatment decisions.

Resection of Heterotopic Ossifications and Total Hip Arthroplasty Using a Single Ludloff Medial Approach: A Case Report.

JBJS Case Connect

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, Musculoskeletal University Center Munich (MUM), University Hospital, LMU Munich, Marchioninistr, Munich, Germany.

Case: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a relatively rare but severe clinical finding around the hip joint, characterized by the formation of extraskeletal bone in soft tissue. We present the case of a 66-year-old man with a severe, painful gait disorder caused by extensive neurogenic bilateral HO. In this case, due to the medial HO localization, we performed a staged bilateral, combined HO resection and total hip arthroplasty using the single medial Ludloff approach.
