Article Abstract

A pilot was designed to study the removal efficiencies of total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) and phosphate by a combined biological and chemical method. Two stages of Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and advanced oxidation processes was operated in batch mode. The UASB reactor was operated with hydraulic retention time of 26 h. UASB removal efficiency of TCOD and phosphate were 62.2 and 36.5%, respectively. Fenton process was used as a post-treatment so as to remove organic matter and nutrients. At this stage, the removal efficiencies of TCOD and phosphate were investigated considering the effect of parameters such as pH, hydrogen peroxide and Fe (II) dose based on Taguchi experimental design. Accordingly, under optimum conditions, pH = 3, 1000 mg/l of HO and 400 mg/l of Fe (II) the removal efficiencies of TCOD and phosphate reached 95.41 and 85.29%, respectively. The combined method removed TCOD and phosphate up to 98.6 and 90.5%, respectively.

The paper reports the results of an experimental study aimed at comparing two configurations of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP): conventional activated sludge (CAS) and oxic-settling-anaerobic process (OSA) with intermittent aeration (IA). A comprehensive monitoring campaign was carried out to assess multiple parameters for comparing the two configurations: carbon and nutrient removal, greenhouse gas emissions, respirometric analysis, and sludge production. A holistic approach has been adopted in the study with the novelty of including the carbon footprint (CF) contribution (as direct, indirect and derivative emissions) in comparing the two configurations.

The rapid growth of production and consumption has led to severe environmental pollution, creating a major challenge to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals (SDGs). To address it, recycling of organic wastes into value-added products is a possible solution. In this work, four typical organic wastes including sewage sludge (SS), chicken manure (CM), food waste (FW), and corn straw (CS) were employed to produce hydrolysates augmenting shortcut nitrification-denitrification (SCND) for nitrogen depletion in wastewater.

The present analysis was conducted as the first research to assess the techno-economic viability of the value-added by-products (struvite, blood meal, bone meal, and raw sheepskin) from a medium-scale sheep slaughterhouse facility with a slaughtering capacity of 300 sheep per day. For this aim, a comparative technical and economic feasibility analysis was performed to assess the synergistic use of slaughterhouse-oriented rendering wastes and struvite recovery from real sheep abattoir effluent within the framework of detailed cost breakdown, break-even point, and payback period analyses. The experimental findings clearly showed that under the optimal conditions (chemical combination of MgCl.

Activated sludge processes with an ultra-short sludge retention time (ultra-short-SRT) are considered to have potential for energy and resource recovery from wastewater. The present study focused on the sludge characteristics, system performance and microbial kinetics in ultra-short-SRT activated sludge (USSAS) processes using typical domestic wastewater (SRT = 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4 d).
