The aim of this study was to investigate sonographic findings of low-grade malignant tumors of the parotid gland. The sonographic findings of all patients treated for T1-T2 low-grade carcinomas of the parotid gland between 2003 and 2018 were retrospectively examined and compared with those of patients with pleomorphic adenomas for the following parameters: definition of tumor margins, echotexture, echogenicity, shape and vascularization. Statistical analysis was performed using the χ test. A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. A total of 310 patients (62 with T1-T2 low-grade malignant tumors, 248 with pleomorphic adenomas) were evaluated. Our analysis detected a statistically significant difference in the definition of margins, echotexture, echogenicity and shape. Furthermore, we could detect a specific pattern (anechoic islets in a small hypoechoic lesion with distal enhancement) appearing far more frequently in low-grade malignant lesions. It seems that there is still potential to reduce the incidence of the false working hypothesis "benign lesion" on imaging of low-grade malignant tumors.
This study aims to investigate the diagnostic values of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and frozen section (FS) in evaluating parotid gland masses subjected to parotidectomy. A retrospective analysis of data from 274 patients who underwent parotidectomy for parotid gland masses was performed at the Department of Otolaryngology of the University Hospital between 2013 and 2019. We compared the preoperative FNAC and intraoperative FS records with the definitive histopathological diagnoses obtained from the surgical resection specimens.
Background And Purpose: Segmentation imperfections (noise) in radiotherapy organ-at-risk segmentation naturally arise from specialist experience and image quality. Using clinical contours can result in sub-optimal convolutional neural network (CNN) training and performance, but manual curation is costly. We address the impact of simulated and clinical segmentation noise on CNN parotid gland (PG) segmentation performance and provide proof-of-concept for an easily implemented auto-curation countermeasure.
Purpose: To assess the impact of retrograde dissection of the facial nerve along the mandibular margin on the postoperative quality of life in patients with benign superficial parotid tumors.
Methods: One hundred and sixteen patients who underwent surgical treatment for benign superficial parotid tumors at Qingdao Central Hospital from January 2020 to January 2023 were involved. The patients were randomly allocated into two groups, with 58 patients in each group using the touch ball method.
Purpose: Microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) is a locally aggressive adnexal carcinoma of the head and neck, which has a high tendency for recurrence. MAC rarely has distant metastasis, with only one previously reported case originating from the periorbital region. We present a patient with periorbital MAC with distant metastasis and a review of all reported patients with metastatic disease.
Purpose: There is no current standard treatment regimen for carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) of the lacrimal gland. Neoadjuvant intraarterial cytoreductive chemotherapy (IACC) followed by multimodal therapy has achieved good locoregional control in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland. We reviewed our experience with neoadjuvant IACC followed by multimodal therapy for CXPA of the lacrimal gland.
