The electricity cost burden of durable medical equipment in the United States.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Paul H. O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University, Bloomington, USA.

Those who rely on durable medical equipment (DME) for their health are more likely to be energy insecure and face higher energy burdens than those who do not. In this article, we evaluate the costs of electricity to run DMEs. We find that the average cost across the most common types of high-frequency DMEs-including oxygen concentrators, continuous positive airway pressure machines, and peritoneal kidney dialysis machines-is between $120 and $333 per year, depending on device size and usage frequency.

Psychosocial correlates of alcohol and substance use in college youth with type 1 diabetes.

J Pediatr Psychol

December 2024

Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Los Angeles, CA, United States.

Objective: Adolescents and young adults with chronic diseases face unique challenges during the college years and may consume alcohol and other substances to cope with stressors. This study aimed to assess the patterns of substance use and to determine psychosocial correlates of these behaviors among college youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Methods: College youth with T1D were recruited via social media and direct outreach into a web-based study.

Revealing urban area from mobile positioning data.

Sci Rep

December 2024

ANETI Lab, Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies, Corvinus University of Budapest, Budapest, 1093, Hungary.

Researchers face the trade-off between publishing mobility data along with their papers while protecting the privacy of the individuals. In addition to the anonymization process, other techniques, such as spatial discretization and location concealing or removal, are applied to achieve these dual objectives. The primary research question is whether concealing the observation area is an adequate form of protection or whether human mobility patterns in urban areas are inherently revealing of location.

Development of a novel modeling framework based on weighted kernel extreme learning machine and ridge regression for streamflow forecasting.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (Dept 2470), North Dakota State University, PO Box 6050, Fargo, ND, 58108-6050, USA.

A precise streamflow forecast is crucial in hydrology for flood alerts, water quantity and quality management, and disaster preparedness. Machine learning (ML) techniques are commonly employed for hydrological prediction; however, they still face certain drawbacks, such as the need to optimize the appropriate predictors, the ability of the models to generalize across different time horizons, and the analysis of high-dimensional time series. This research aims to address these specific drawbacks by developing a novel framework for streamflow forecasting.

TCIPP (tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate) and TCEP (tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate) are organophosphate ester flame retardants found in various consumer products, posing significant health and environmental risks through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal exposure. Research reveals these compounds cause oxidative stress, inflammation, endocrine disruption, genotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and potentially hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, developmental, reproductive, and immunotoxicity. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the toxicological mechanisms of TCIPP and TCEP and presents the latest data on their toxicological effects obtained in vitro and in vivo, using omic systems, and on the basis of computational modelling.
