Exfoliated and reassembled graphite (ERG) forms macroscopic, high aspect ratio (1 : >10) and highly conductive coating layers that are strongly adherent to paper, wood, cloth, ceramic and other substrates. The coating precursor is an aqueous dispersion of graphite that exfoliates spontaneously in alkaline cellulose solutions, forming stable dispersions. These can be applied to the substrates by using different painting, coating and lithography techniques. The coating morphology changes from highly smooth to porous and rough, depending on the finishing procedure used. Coated paper sheets are flexible and they perform as leads in electrical circuitry and as electrodes in electrodeposition, supercapacitors, hygroelectricity cells and other electrochemical devices suitable for flexible and wearable electronics. These unique properties of ERG are explained as a consequence of the amphiphilic character of cellulose, which allows it to play the roles of exfoliant, dispersant, stabilizer, adhesive and plasticizer, while graphite powder is transformed into a cohesive laminated nanocomposite.

Nacre is a classic model, providing an inspiration for fabricating high-performance bulk nanocomposites with the two-dimensional platelets. However, the "brick" of nacre, aragonite platelet, is an ideal building block for making high-performance bulk nanocomposites. Herein, we demonstrated a strong and tough conductive nacre through reassembling aragonite platelets with bridged by MXene nanosheets and hydrogen bonding, not only providing high mechanical properties but also excellent electrical conductivity.

Membranes incorporating two-dimensional (2D) materials have shown great potential for water purification and energy storage and conversion applications. Their ordered interlayer galleries can be modified for their tunable chemical and structural properties. Montmorillonite (MMT) is an earth-abundant phyllosilicate mineral that can be exfoliated into 2D flakes and reassembled into membranes.

Exploitation of advanced methotrexate (MTX) delivery with nanocomposites has important clinical application value. Poloxamer 188 micelle and layered double hydroxide loaded with MTX (LDH-MTX) by exfoliation reassembling were used to prepare LDH-MTX-poloxamer 188 nanocomposites with good dispersibility and efficient cellular uptake for controlled drug delivery. The LDH-MTX-poloxamer 188 nanocomposites with sphere-like morphology, of which the average hydrodynamic diameter was <100 nm, were shown to have better dispersion state than naked LDH-MTX.

The layer-by-layer mesoporous nanohybrids of Ni-Cr-layered double hydroxide (Ni-Cr-LDH) and polyoxotungstate nanoclusters (Ni-Cr-LDH-POW) are prepared via exfoliation reassembling strategy. The intercalative hybridization of Ni-Cr-LDH with POW nanoclusters leads to forming a layer-by-layer stacking framework with significant expansion of the interplanar spacing and surface area. The aqueous hybrid supercapacitor (AHSC) and all-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (SSHSC) devices are fabricated using Ni-Cr-LDH-POW nanohybrid as a cathode and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as an anode material.

Many materials and additives perform well as fire retardants and suppressants, but there is an ever-growing list of unfulfilled demands requiring new developments. This work explores the outstanding dispersant and adhesive performances of cellulose to create a new effective fire-retardant: exfoliated and reassembled graphite (ERG). This is a new 2D polyfunctional material formed by drying aqueous dispersions of graphite and cellulose on wood, canvas, and other lignocellulosic materials, thus producing adherent layers that reduce the damage caused by a flame to the substrates.
