Global warming has received widespread concern. The increasing concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) is one of the major factors contributing to global warming. Soil is a major source of GHG. Global warming could feed back on soil GHG emission. Warming influences the growth of plants, animals, microbes and their interactions, as well as the cycling of soil matters (especially nitrogen and carbon). Consequently, warming has the potential to affect soil GHG emission. We summarized the effects of warming on soil NO, and CH emissions and the underlying mechanisms. In general, warming increased the emission of these two greenhouse gases, which are mainly related to the effects of temperature on the abundance and composition of ammonia oxidizing bacteria, denitrification functional genes, methane-producing bacteria and methane-oxidizing bacteria. Soil GHG emissions are affected by plant species characteristics, nutrient uptake and community composition, as well as soil nutrient element content, water content, pH and other physical and chemical properties. Further studies are needed to elucidate the microbial mechanisms of GHG emission. In addition, various warming patterns should be considered in the study of GHG emissions, and more attention should be paid on the interactive effects between warming and other environmental factors. It will provide solid theoretical basis for the prediction of global climate change and GHG emissions.

Global warming changes flowering times of many plant species, with potential impacts on frost damage and their synchronization with pollinator activity. These effects can have severe impacts on plant fitness, yet we know little about how frequently they occur and the extent of damage they cause. We addressed this topic in a thermophilic orchid with a highly specific pollination mechanism, the Small Spider Orchid, RchB, in six populations in Northern Switzerland.

Climate change aggravated wildfire behaviour in the Iberian Peninsula in recent years.

NPJ Clim Atmos Sci

January 2025

CRETUS, Non-Linear Physics Group, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Climate change is considered to affect wildfire spread both by increasing fuel dryness and by altering vegetation mass and structure. However, the direct effect of global warming on wildfires is hard to quantify due to the multiple non-climatic factors involved in their ignition and spread. By combining wildfire observations with the latest generation of climate models, here we show that more than half of the large wildfires (area>500 ha) occurring in the Iberian Peninsula between 2001 and 2021 present a significant increase in the rate of spread with respect to what it would have been in the pre-industrial period, attributable to global warming.

Waste plastic oils (WPOs) can help address the global energy crisis caused by the rapid depletion of fossil fuels, global warming, and strict emission regulations. The present research delves into the intricate interplay of higher alcohol blends in the context of combustion, performance, and emission characteristics within a common rail direct injection engine. In this regard, 1-hexanol has been selected as the blending constituent for the WPO to tackle emission challenges while concurrently reducing dependence on conventional fuel, as it stands out for its enhanced fuel properties compared to lower alcohols.

Natural biopolymer-based liquid mulching films (LMF) have received widespread attention, whereas the fragile structure and limited functionality have severely restricted their application. Herein, polydopamine-coated montmorillonite micro/nanoparticles enhanced pectin-based sprayable multifunctional liquid mulching films (P-MMT@PDA LMF) were prepared. Dopamine has abundant active sites, and its self-polymerization onto the surface of MMT improves the compatibility of MMT with pectin chains, facilitates the homogeneous dispersion of MMT@PDA in pectin polymers, and makes them more tightly entangled through hydrogen bonding.

January 2025

International Research Center for Marine Biosciences, Ministry of Science and Technology, Shanghai Ocean University, Shanghai 201306, China; Marine Biomedical Science and Technology Innovation Platform of Lin-gang Special Area, Shanghai 201306, China. Electronic address:

Ocean acidification and warming are significant stressors impacting marine ecosystems, exerting profound effects on the physiological ecology of marine organisms. We investigated the impact of ocean acidification and warming on the immune system of mussels, focusing on the regulatory mechanisms of intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis. The study explored the effects on the immune response ability of mussels (Mytilus coruscus) after 14 and 21 days under combined conditions of different temperatures (20 °C and 30 °C) and pH (8.
