Spatial information is encoded by location-dependent hippocampal place cell firing rates and sub-second, rhythmic entrainment of spike times. These rate and temporal codes have primarily been characterized in low-dimensional environments under limited cognitive demands; but how is coding configured in complex environments when individual place cells signal several locations, individual locations contribute to multiple routes and functional demands vary? Quantifying CA1 population dynamics of male rats during a decision-making task, here we show that the phase of individual place cells' spikes relative to the local theta rhythm shifts to differentiate activity in different place fields. Theta phase coding also disambiguates repeated visits to the same location during different routes, particularly preceding spatial decisions.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the diffuse invasion of glioblastoma cells is crucial for addressing tumor aggressiveness and resistance to treatment, which negatively impacts patient prognosis.
  • The study utilizes a novel computational method to analyze GBM xenografts, distinguishing human tumor cells from the mouse tumor microenvironment (TME), resulting in a detailed overview of 15 tumor cell programs linked to invasion pathways.
  • The findings suggest targeted interventions on tumor and TME components could lead to improved therapies by revealing compensatory mechanisms that might aid in developing more effective combination treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • * Analyzed data from 7948 HF patients over a minimum of 2 years, employing topological data analysis (TDA) to find 19 patient clusters and trajectory analysis to outline disease evolution.
  • * Findings included a 5-year survival rate across clusters ranging from 20% to 100%, with strong validation results from external and internal cohorts, confirming the reliability of the identified patient pathways.

has long been a pillar of biotechnological production and basic research. More recently, strides to exploit the functional repertoire of nonconventional yeasts for biotechnological production have been made. Genomes and genetic tools for these yeasts are not always available, and yeast genomics alone may be insufficient to determine the functional features in yeast metabolism.
