McMurry coupling is one of the most useful and convenient tools for the preparation of π-conjugated molecules. However, for the synthesis of strained macrocycles containing ethynylene linkages, reduction of ethynylene to vinylene linkage sometimes took place. Especially, for the synthesis of macrocyclic π-extended thiophene hexamers using McMurry coupling of dialdehyde composed of three thienylene, two ethynylene, and two formyl groups, reduction of ethynylenes to vinylenes often takes place to produce unique products in a one-pot procedure, depending on very small steric and electronic effects such as reaction temperature, amounts of titanium reagent, and substituents of thiophene hexamers. The attractive structures and functional properties of reduced thiophene hexamers have been determined using X-ray analysis and OFET measurements.

Understanding how subtle structural differences between macrocyclic conformational isomers impact their properties and separation has garnered increasing attention in the field of supramolecular synthetic chemistry. In this work, a series of tetraphenylene (TPE)-embedded butterfly bis-crown ether macrocycles (BCE[n], n = 4-7), comprising two crown ether side rings and a TPE core, are synthesized through intramolecular McMurry coupling. Unexpectedly, the presence of flexible oligoethylene chains with varying lengths are found to influence molecular conformation via multiple intramolecular interactions, resulting in the formation of two stabilized conformers with specific semi-rigid symmetric/asymmetric structures (sym-BCE[n] and asym-BCE[n], n = 5, 6).

The impact of organometallic chemistry on the terpene field only really blossomed in the 1960s and 1970s with the realisation that carbon-carbon bond formation under mild conditions could be achieved by using nickel or iron carbonyls as synthetic reagents. Concomitantly, the development of palladium derivatives capable of the controlled coupling of isoprene units attracted the attention of numerous highly talented researchers, including future Nobel laureates. We discuss briefly how early work on the syntheses of simple monoterpenes soon progressed to sesquiterpenes and diterpenes of increasing complexity, such as humulene, flexibilene, vitamin A, or pheromones of commercial value, in particular those used in perfumery (muscone, lavandulol), or grandisol and red scale pheromone as replacements for harmful pesticides.

Being the most frequently diagnosed disease, breast cancer is mainly classified as ER+ cancers due to the detection of estrogen receptor (ER) expression. Irrespetive of the successes achieved in the treatment of ER+ cancers by the use of selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) drugs like tamoxifen, resistance to the drug is a major clinical obstacle. Working on alternative treatment approaches, here, on the basis of mode of action of aromatase for the conversion of androstenedione to oestrogen, a series of compounds was developed.

Purpose: Treatment of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is guided by risk stratification using clinical and pathologic criteria. This study aimed to develop a natural language processing (NLP) model for identifying patients with high-risk NMIBC retrospectively from unstructured electronic medical records (EMRs) and to apply the model to describe patient and tumor characteristics.

Methods: We used three independent EMR-derived data sets including adult patients with a bladder cancer diagnosis in 2011-2020 for NLP model development and training (n = 140), validation (n = 697), and application for the retrospective cohort analysis (n = 4,402).

An interesting molecular architecture, butterflyene, resembling the shape of a butterfly has been synthesized a sequence of cyclocondensation, benzylic oxidation, McMurry coupling and Diels-Alder reaction (DAR), successively. The DAR of the tetrasubstituted double bond of a bicyclopentylidene moiety with various dienes has been performed to prepare the analogues of butterflyene. DFT calculations have also been used to analyze the structural optimization and reaction energies.
