A new approach to prepare α-selanyl-α,β-unsaturated thioesters from propargylthioalkynes and an electrophilic selenium species is reported. Pivotal is the intermediacy of a sulfur-stabilized vinyl cation, which is captured intramolecularly and ultimately enables 37 examples of the target compounds to be prepared in good yields. Computational studies shed light on the nature of intermediates in this transformation.

Herein, aromaticity-driven thio(seleno)ester group transfer from novel 1,4-dihydropyridine thio(seleno)esters to alkene feedstocks is disclosed by merging palladium and photoredox catalysis. In this process, photoactivation of dihydropyridine thio(seleno)esters is integrated with regioselective hydrometalation of alkenes, avoiding photoinduced Pd-C bond homolysis of organopalladium intermediates. Additionally, a regioselective hydroselenocarbonylation of an alkene is accomplished for the first time using a bench-stable selenoester reagent.

Branch-point syntheses in nonribosomal peptide assembly are rare but useful strategies to generate tripodal peptides with advantageous hexadentate iron-chelating capabilities, as seen in siderophores. However, the chemical logic underlying the peptide branching by nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) often remains complex and elusive. Here, we review the common strategies for the biosynthesis of branched nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) and present our biochemical investigation on the NRPS-catalyzed assembly of fimsbactin A, a branched mixed-ligand siderophore produced by the human pathogenic strain .

Mitochondrial dysfunctions are closely associated with different types of disease, including cancer. Carnitine acetyltransferase (CRAT) is a mitochondrial-localized enzyme catalyzing the reversible transfer of acyl groups from an acyl-CoA thioester to carnitine and regulates the ratio of acyl-CoA/CoA. Our bioinformatics analysis using public database revealed a significant decrease of CRAT expression in ovarian cancer (OC).

Cyanobacteria are widespread, photosynthetic, gram-negative bacteria that generate numerous bioactive secondary metabolites complex biosynthetic enzymatic machinery. The model cyanobacterium sp. strain PCC 7002, hereafter referred to as PCC 7002, contains a type I polyketide synthase (PKS), termed olefin synthase (OlsWT), that synthesizes 1-nonadecene and 1,14-nonadecadiene: α-olefins that are important for growth at low temperatures.
