JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) establishes a persistent, asymptomatic kidney infection in most of the population. However, JCPyV can reactivate in immunocompromised individuals and cause progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a fatal demyelinating disease with no approved treatment. Mutations in the hypervariable non-coding control region (NCCR) of the JCPyV genome have been linked to disease outcomes and neuropathogenesis, yet few metanalyses document these associations.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) usually causes mild, self-limiting, or asymptomatic infection in children, typically infectious mononucleosis. The severe course is more common in immunocompromised patients. Neurological complications of primary infection, reactivation of the latent infection, or immune-mediated are well-documented.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a condition that can result in changes in both urine production and creatinine levels in the bloodstream, complicating the treatment process and worsening outcomes for many hospitalized patients. BK polyomavirus (BKPyV), a member of the Polyomaviridae family, is prevalent in the population and remains latent in the body. It can reactivate in individuals with a compromised immune system, particularly post-kidney transplant, and can activate various transcription factors and immune mediators.

Objectives: To determine the seroprevalence of Varicella Zoster virus (VZV) immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies among hemodialysis patients (HDP). Additionally, the presence of VZV viral DNA has been investigated for possible reactivation status.
Methods: Sera from 265 individuals were collected and tested.
